Virginia continues to find rising stars on the track.

Saturday, the Cavaliers continued to grind their way through their indoor season and stopped by Philadelphia to race at the Penn 10 Elite against Penn State, Harvard, Cornell, Villanova and others. Sophomore Tatum David and junior Sarah Akpan had great races in the women’s mile and 60 meter dash, and senior Sophie Atkinson ran to a phenomenal new personal record in the women’s 3,000 meters.

The meet began with the women’s weight throw where graduate student Estel Valeanu placed fourth, setting a new personal record of 18.32 meters. Next came the women’s high jump where a duo of Virginia jumpers — junior Celia Rifaterra and senior Carly Tarentino — took first and second with respective jumps of 1.80 and 1.77 meters. Then, junior Samantha Romano nabbed seventh in pole vault, while senior Trina Barcarola placed tenth. In long jump, graduate student Lauren Yeboah-Kodie jumped 5.92 meters, a new personal record, and placed fifth.

Freshman Caleb Holman had a strong showing, claiming first in men’s triple jump with 15.15 meters. Juniors Jeremiah Nubbe and Keyandre Davis took second and third, throwing 22.73 meters and 21.22, respectively.

In the women’s mile, David smashed through her race, snatching a new PR of 4:33.27 and a first place finish. This race moved her into No. 7 of the NCAA Division I female runners in the mile as she dropped a little over two seconds. Freshman Stella Kermes placed sixth with a new personal record of 4:42.77.  On the men’s side, junior Gary Martin was edged out at the end by Villanova senior Liam Murphy, shifting him into third overall with a time of 3:54.94, while senior Wes Porter took tenth.

Senior Brooke Lumpkin had a decisive win in women’s shot put, throwing 15.88 meters, and Valeanu took second in 15.67 meters. Then, senior Janae Profit and freshman Theresa Breckley placed fourth and eighth.

For the 60 meter hurdles, Virginia hurdlers, senior Ethan Robinson and freshman Maya Rollins, both claimed second in 7.86 and 8.50 seconds. Dashing to first place, Sarah Akpan claimed a new personal record of 7.43 seconds.

Junior Justin Rogers nabbed sixth in pole vault, vaulting 4.87. When running events resumed, sophomore Ariel Fletcher took sixth in the women’s 400 meters in 55.95 seconds, and senior Alex Sherman second in 47.17 in the men’s.

In the women’s 800 meter race, graduate student Annie Jackson edged out Penn senior Chole Hassman for third, dropping around two seconds, and freshman Ella Woehckle placed seventh. Freshman James Ford and senior Myles Plumber took seventh and tenth on the men’s side. Next, Akpan and Fletcher placed third and tenth in the women’s 200 meters, and then Sherman took eighth on the men’s side.

Senior Sophie Atkinson dominated in the women’s 3000 meters, dropping six seconds for a new time of 9:14.22. Sophomore Gillain Bushee placed third nine seconds later. Senior Jenny Schilling dropped out of the race around the 2k mark, seeming to be in significant pain.

The Virginia women and men dominated in the women’s distance medley relay, taking first and second for both relays. They continued this balanced performance into the 4x400 meter relay as they placed second on either side, although the women had a significantly closer finish.

The Cavaliers will resume their season back in Virginia Feb. 7-8 at the East Coast Invitational in Virginia Beach.
