An attacker was apprehended by local police as of 5:45 p.m. according to an emergency alert sent out by the University. The shelter in place has been lifted but a police presence will remain in the area.

In a statement to The Cavalier Daily, University Spokesperson Bethanie Glover said that one victim was transported to the University Medical Center and is in critical condition.

The suspect was apprehended near Stribling Avenue, according to Glover. Neither the suspect nor the victim have any affiliation with the University. Glover said the Charlottesville Police Department will conduct the remainder of the investigation.

The University issued an alert via text and email to community members at 4:49 p.m. Thursday, warning of an active attacker armed with a knife near Alumni Hall. The message stated ‘RUN HIDE FIGHT’ if community members were to come into contact with the suspect.

At 5:04 p.m., the University confirmed that there was a shelter-in-place order according to an emergency alert.

The suspect was a middle aged white male in white shirt, blue pants and white shoes.

This was the first time since the Nov. 13, 2022 shooting that the University issued a “RUN HIDE FIGHT” order. This warning comes after the University was on a shelter-in-place order for much of Tuesday morning and early afternoon as a suspect wanted by police remained at-large.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
