This week: Swedish pen pals, gravity studies and a student band

1950s
February 7, 1958
“University Student Is Overseas Date Bureau”

Bill Bartsch, a third year graduate student, put a notice for penpals in a Swedish magazine while studying in University of Stockholm as a Fullbright scholar. Having forgotten about it, he was surprised to find hundreds of letters from interested women when he returned to the University. Overwhelmed by the response, he sought the help of his fellow students to take some of the women off of his hands.

1960s

Feb. 3, 1965
“Gravitation calculation attempted”

Professors of physics and aerospace engineering began work on a project examining gravitational phenomena, backed by a $100,000 grant from NASA. The professors, who aimed to measure gravitational attraction over time, hoped to measure the gravitational constant on Earth with new levels of precision.

1970s

“University – 1914”

This photograph from 1914 depicts a successful attempt by a University professor to recreate the Wright Brothers’ miraculous first flight, which had occurred 11 years prior. About 300 spectators witnessed the event on Lambeth field.

1980s

Feb. 6, 1985
“Student Council criticizes apartheid”

In a 14-11 vote, Student Council passed a motion calling on members of the University community to condemn apartheid in South Africa and discuss the potential impacts of divesting University investments in the country. While some representatives opposed the motion, arguing that apartheid did not impact the University’s student body, others said it was important to raise student awareness about the actions of South Africa’s government.


1990s

February 4, 1991
“The standard for four years”

Standard Issue, a popular student band in the early 90s, was known for its fun and theatrical performances, like a Halloween stunt with a pumpkin head full of hamburger meat. Their ability to not take themselves too seriously as well as their unique mix of musical styles and energetic shows had made them a University favorite. Over four years, they built a strong reputation, played gigs beyond Charlottesville, and even recorded an EP.


2000s

“Energy Unplugged”

The University’s Students for Environmental Action hosted a conference called Energy Unplugged, where experts gathered to present on environmental issues such as energy efficiency and global warming. Speakers emphasized the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from Grounds and other college campuses through technology such as solar power and green roofing.
