The University announced Wednesday that it will be releasing reports to the public from the external review of the Nov. 13, 2022 shooting by mid-March, according to a statement from Chief Communications Officer Brian Coy.
The University had previously committed to releasing the report upon completion of the criminal proceedings against Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., who pleaded guilty in November. In August, a judge denied the Daily Progress’s petition for the University to release the review after Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Hingeley intervened.
Hingeley has now withdrawn his concern that releasing the details in the report could be used in the case against Jones.
Jones pled guilty in Albemarle County Circuit Court to three counts of first-degree murder for the killing of students Devin Chandler, D’Sean Perry and Lavel Davis Jr., along with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding and five counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. With Jones’ guilty plea, the case and his sentencing have been delayed until later this year.
The University already shared the external review with the families of Chandler, Davis Jr. and Perry, as well as Michael Hollins Jr. and Marlee Morgan, two students who were seriously injured in the shooting. Once the victims and families of the deceased have reviewed the reports and met with University officials, the University will release them to the general public.
Coy said the University is prioritizing giving the families time to process the reports while also acknowledging the public and community’s interest in an account of the Nov. 13 events. The University also stated that, to comply with federal student privacy regulations, the reports will include redactions to protect private student information as required by law, along with sensitive public safety details.
