The University announced it will delay the start of classes until noon Thursday due to a winter storm that hit Charlottesville Wednesday. This announcement was sent to the University community in an email from J.J. Davis, executive vice president and chief operating officer.

This decision comes after the University canceled classes held after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Davis instructed students and faculty to check the Operations Status Board for the most up-to-date information regarding University operations.

The Tuesday cancellation comes as Davis said Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning that the University would operate on a normal schedule. As snowfall totals continued to pick up in the Charlottesville area, Davis said the University had revised the modified schedule and asked that classes currently in session at the time of her email conclude early to allow community members to return home safely. Davis also encouraged professors to hold classes online instead of canceling.

According to the status board, all libraries except for Clemons Library are closed Wednesday as of 1:15 p.m. Clemons will remain open until 10 p.m. All student spaces including the 1515 Student Center, the Rotunda and Student Health and Wellness are closed. Newcomb Hall will remain open until midnight. All U.Va. Recreation programs are canceled until noon Thursday. The University Transit Service is operating on a modified schedule, with the Redline not operating and the Blueline operating on a modified route. Green Line and Gold Line routes will not operate on Hereford Road.

In a statement to The Cavalier Daily, University Spokesperson Bethanie Glover said that the Library Inclement Weather policy states that if the University closes for weather, all libraries except Clemons close as well.

The National Weather Service in Washington and Baltimore issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Albemarle County until 7 p.m. Wednesday evening. The advisory states that road conditions could be “slippery” and “hazardous” in a manner that could impact the evening commute.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
