A message of encouragement and recognition in light of recent events

No matter what form it takes, this care for yourself and others is vital.

Dear University Community,

We want to recognize each member of our cherished University community for the role that you play in supporting and caring for others. Though every new semester brings with it times both wonderful and challenging, the past several weeks have brought about especially scary and uncertain moments. For some, recent events have brought back intense feelings that have not been experienced since the fall of 2022. Meanwhile, others are dealing with these tumultuous emotions and experiences for the first time. Each student, employee, faculty member and University and Charlottesville community member deserves to feel safe, a feeling that has been uprooted in the past few weeks.

These feelings can be confusing, may come about and impact us in ways that we do not anticipate, or plague us when we least expect them to. We urge you to look out for your communities and yourself. Be kind to one another and take the time to slow down and care for yourselves. For some, this may look like going for a walk with a friend, talking with a counselor or planning a picnic to spend time with others while enjoying the spring weather. For others, this may look like settling in with a blanket and reading that book that you’ve been meaning to catch up on.

No matter what form it takes, this care for yourself and others is vital. Do not be afraid to ask for help or to communicate your needs to others. What matters right now is showing love to yourself and others and being cognisant of the different paths everyone is taking to process the trying events of this semester.

Our community is strong and resilient, and we will persist as we have always done and will forever continue to do. Remember to uplift and care for those around you. Know that you have a place in this community. We are one. Together, we are stronger. As always, know that though you may never see us, we are committed to walking alongside you no matter what lies ahead. Be well, and find joy in the little wonders that surround you wherever you may be.

The A.N.G.E.L.S. Society is a secret society dedicated to reaching out to students and groups who display acts of kindness to their communities.
