At their annual retreat at Graves Mountain Lodge, Honor Committee representatives elected members of their new executive committee, including Thomas Ackleson, current vice chair for operations and third-year Engineering student, as its next chair. Ackleson and the new executive committee will officially assume their roles Monday, April 7.
Outlining his vision for the new term, Ackleson expressed his confidence and faith in the honor system and in the community of trust at the University.
“Honor has come a long way towards fulfilling the promises made by the multi-sanction constitution, but important work remains,” Ackleson said. “In particular, the focus of this term will be developing meaning — we want to highlight the rights and privileges students and faculty benefit from as a result of our unique system.”
Ackleson previously served as a Support Officer and senior counsel representing members of the University community in Honor proceedings before first being elected to the Committee last year and re-elected in the recent student elections. He succeeds Laura Howard, current Committee chair and fourth-year College student.
Howard and the other outgoing Committee members could not vote for the chair or members of the executive committee, as only incoming representatives are eligible to run for those positions and vote for candidates to serve on the executive committee.
Alexander Church, current vice chair for hearings and third-year Engineering student, will serve as the Committee’s next vice chair for investigations — replacing Seamus Oliver, incoming Committee member and third-year College student.
Mary Holland Mason, current Committee member and third-year Batten student, will serve as the next vice chair for hearings, replacing Church.
Genny Freed, current senior counsel and second-year College student, will serve as the next vice chair for sanctions.
Penelope Molitz, current Committee member and third-year Education student, will serve as the next vice chair for the undergraduate community.
Nile Liu, Medical student, will serve as the next vice chair for the graduate community.
Caelin Rowell, current senior counsel and third-year Commerce student, will serve as the next vice chair for operations, replacing Ackleson.
Ackleson expressed optimism about the future of the honor system under its new leadership, highlighting his trust in those elected to guide it and emphasizing the importance of integrity within the University.
“I’m confident in our elected Representatives and Vice Chairs, and we’re eager to foster a meaningful culture of integrity at the University,” Ackeslon said.
The Honor Committee will meet for its final regularly scheduled meeting of the current term on Sunday at 7 p.m. before the new Committee members assume their positions the following day.
