The beaches, booze and beauty of spring break have come and gone. Dreadful and distressing midterms are somehow rapidly approaching yet again. The weather app displays a sea of mid-40s and light drizzle. March Madness? More like March sadness.

Spring is coming, and with it a flurry of emotions entangled with new opportunities the new season brings — like stress about midterms, job searches or heartbreak. These four songs can’t solve your worries about the future, but they may make it a little more bearable while you work through life’s challenges.

Imagine you are a first year again. Or, if you are one like me, take some time to reflect on these past few months. Was it what you expected it to be? Before I first arrived on Grounds, I spent a lot of time wondering about my soon-to-be college life. I imagined taking classes that sparked my curiosity, spending weekends exploring Charlottesville with friends and most of all, settling into a place that I would call home for the next four years. Finding housing for my second year never crossed my mind. While some parts of college serve as points of growth, struggling to find housing within the first few months of college is not one of them. Housing and Residence Life can do more to help first years ease into a fast-paced and stressful housing process they are not prepared for.

Following the cancellation of a traditional week-long spring break last year, Alternative Spring Break program was able to take its talents across the country again in early March to engage in service trips benefiting communities outside of Charlottesville. Students traveled to sites such as Arches National Park, Sequoia National Park and New Orleans to complete projects focused on environmental restoration and housing needs.

The University has over 800 student organizations — students can choose to involve themselves in the arts, debate, advocacy, politics, sports, dance and far more. A focus for many groups, however, is service. Students volunteer their time to support local, national and even global causes. Despite these efforts, professors, fellow students and external communities voice ethical concerns with students volunteering outside the University community. In particular, issues with power dynamics and the long-term impacts of student volunteering have yet to be addressed at a large scale.

Let’s face it — we are all desperate to go to concerts again. There is nothing quite like it. Tickets are overpriced, you can’t see over the tall guy in front of you and someone will definitely elbow you in the head in their fit of excitement, but we love them anyway. Nothing truly compares to dragging all of your friends to JPJ to see your favorite band perform. One of the biggest letdowns of the past year was all the canceled concerts and postponed tours. Some artists have turned to virtual alternatives to in-person performances.

Every April, the Asian Student Union hosts Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Heritage Month — a month dedicated to celebrating Asian culture and educating students on Asian American history. While Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is nationally celebrated in May to commemorate the first immigration of Japanese people to the United States, ASU’s APIDAHM takes place in April to avoid conflicts with exam season and to allow for events throughout the entire month.

For Alternative Spring Break, spring break usually provides an opportunity for students to engage in week-long service learning projects outside Charlottesville. With the University’s nixing of a week-long break period this academic year, ASB was forced to adapt — especially when considering the University’s emphasis on limited travel. ASB used this challenge as an opportunity to foster stronger connections with local programs, recentering their organization’s goals towards applying service learning directly to the Charlottesville community.

Spring break is often a hallmark of the college experience with students traveling together, visiting friends and family, volunteering and participating in other social activities. But in a school year like no other, the University has had to make adjustments to the regular academic calendar. For the spring of 2021, the University decided to forgo the typical spring break to reduce travel in favor of four “break days” scattered throughout the semester on Feb. 17, March 9, March 29 and April 15.
