Rarely have two words caused such controversy in the University community. However, the addition of the chant "not gay" to the University's "Good Ol' Song" has created a ferment of opinions, campaigns and editorials from those defending or criticizing it.

THE ENVIRONMENTALIST movement is a modern hoax. Its substance is nothing more than a sense of self-righteousness, similar to the complacency found in religious fanaticism.

BACK IN the day before his uber-politico status, Tom Bednar was my editor. He taught me the cardinal rule of op-ed writing: Never let "I" or emotions play too big a role in an article. I listened to him for two and a half years. Now it's time to break the rules.

ONE BY one, we climbed out the bathroom window and onto the roof.

AS I SAT on the floor of my room earlier this week, my back supported by an old dusty couch and my mind comfortably on cruise control, I thought about the columns I'd written this year and what they had attempted to accomplish. As I sat, reminiscing and bemoaning the quick passage of yet another year, a singular realization - a "mind brake" if you will - suddenly screeched me to a halt.

It's not every day that one meets a man like John T. Casteen III, the seventh president of the University.

I went shopping this week ... with my girlfriend. For most men, that sounds like the opening lines to a horror movie. Women are always saying they want their man to show more emotion. Well ladies, here's the answer. Tell your guy that you want him to come shopping all day with you, and you will finally see him weep like a little girl. And if you break the news during the final game of a best-of-seven series, you should make sure there aren't any guns in the apartment.

IT'S ALMOST upon us. Twice a year, in our summer mail-out issue and then once again in the Orientation Issue, The Cavalier Daily Opinion page offers numerous columns providing advice to those naïve first-years who might not yet understand the many traditions and peculiarities of "The University." Included among these are "Eat a Gusburger" or "Don't sign up for 8 a.m. classes." These tidbits of wisdom are provided to make the transition from high school to college all the easier. But, we here at the ol' CD don't provide any reminders or additional advice after students actually get here. We've left the rest of the University community high and dry.

In the past week, fourth-year Commerce student Christopher Smith has administered not one, not two - but 69 interviews for the University Guide Service and Resident Staff.

Two hundred fifty third-year students have applied to live in one of 48 rooms on the Lawn in the upcoming academic year -- an increase from previous years.

We at the University have many blessings in life, things that we often take for granted. This Thanksgiving, The Cavalier Daily asked University students, faculty and administrators to write about the things for which they are thankful:

Participating in activities on Mr. Jefferson's fabled Lawn is just another of the many special opportunities that make up the University experience. Two weeks ago, several students seized this opportunity, but with a little twist. Anybody who passed by the south end of the Lawn the night of Oct. 13, a Wednesday, witnessed an inspiring sight -- October Camp, an overnight rally for diversity. October Camp was one instance of student activism, a phenomenon that is by no means new to the University.

TOMORROW is Fall Convocation, and it was at Convocation two years ago that, summoning the views of many colleagues and students, I outlined the Faculty Senate's initiative to build intellectual community. We wanted to help reanimate the exchange of ideas among faculty and students, both within and beyond the classroom. In this context, I also briefly raised a question that had been around for some time -- namely, the deferral of fraternity and sorority rush.

To many college women, breast cancer may seem like something they do not need to worry about. Third-year College student Jennifer Abastillas, however, believes young women should be aware of the disease.

No one wants to think that it could ever happen to them. But for two University women this week, it did. Despite the University's best efforts, sexual assault still takes place in our community a few times a year. And as such, every University student should re-examine our methods of prevention and protection.
