It's time to be real. I'm afraid I've been keeping a secret from you for a long time, and the moment to come forward has finally arrived. I’ve always advocated for honesty and transparency, so it’s only fair that I stick to these values for the sake of the students at this University and the readers of The Cavalier Daily. I, Cecy Juárez, am one of the three “squirrels of U.Va.” running the @thesquirrelsofuva page.

I’ve been a part of The Cavalier Daily for as long as someone could be — eight semesters strong. I never expected to stay this long. Starting out, I was just grateful to find somewhere to work out my atrophying writing muscles and feel like a part of the University community from the confines of my dorm. I’ve always liked writing creatively, and Life Columnist seemed like a safe place to try that out without much pressure. My understanding was that I would only share my perspectives on life in a very wholesome way. After all, the Life desk is all about everyday life on Grounds. I thought I would be like some kind of Gossip Girl — writing silly, personal columns every two weeks and never leaving my bed.

If you ever see me around Grounds, you probably don’t see me for long. I’m often zooming on my blue electric beach cruiser bike, riding from one place to another. You may have even had the displeasure of hearing me sing off-tune to the music in my headphones as I ride on by. I've been biking around Grounds for about two years now, and I've learned a lot about bike maintenance, bike accessibility and how steep that hill in front of Clark Library really is. But after all this time, the most important lesson I’ve learned from biking is how to be more mindful.

I’m 22 years old. I can vote, drink, sign contracts and drive — although the driving part is debatable. In all legal and literal aspects, I’m an adult. However, I can’t help but want to act like a child again. As I roam the puddle-ridden Grounds after winter break and admire the ice-crusted branches, I find myself mourning the times when I used to climb trees. Sometimes, I think life would be a lot brighter if I allowed myself to tackle my days the way I would as a child.

You’d think that after nearly four years of college, I'd consider myself knowledgeable on how to be a student, at the very least. Just like me, you’d be wrong. As I approach the end of my term as an editor at The Cavalier Daily after three consecutive terms and especially the end of my college career, I’ve realized that I haven’t figured out as much as I thought I would. On the contrary, I’m left with more questions than ever before. Even though I've arrived so far and done so much more than I could have ever imagined, I cannot come to convince myself that I know how to do tasks. And maybe that’s okay.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the lunar calendar, is a time of fasting, prayer and reflection for the Muslim community. At the University, practicing Muslim students have carved out their own space to celebrate the holiday and forge a community that supports one another.

Members from various Native American nations across Virginia, including the Monacan, Powhatan and Chickahominy tribes, gathered together to celebrate their Indigenous cultures at the University Saturday. A thundering drum performance from the Red Clay Singers signaled the beginning of the Powwow. Performers adorned in traditional regalia dispersed throughout the Amphitheater and danced along to the powerful rhythm. The Native American Student Association’s Powwow put Virginia’s Indigenous communities on center stage with a remarkable show of pride and solidarity.

Even though Thanksgiving has already passed, it is never too late to learn how to bake an apple pie from scratch and create something delicious for your friends and family. Apple pies are a timeless classic and my personal favorite dessert. As someone who enjoys eating extra sour green apples on the daily, baking apple pie is my love letter to my favorite fruit.

Whether Virginia is in the midst of a winning or losing season, one thing remains constant — tailgates. Parking lots all across Grounds are filled to the brim with cars, food and high spirits. Students, families and alumni can be counted on to come together for the sake of enjoying one another's company before a game. No matter the age of the fan, students, family and alumni alike share one major motivation when they attend University tailgates — to share in the company of one another.

I recently turned 21, so you know what that means — it’s time to meditate on my impending doom and come to terms with my own mortality. Now, don’t get me wrong, I'm not running around in circles in a frenzied panic, cringing at the idea of aging. I understand the concept of death perfectly well. Mortality, I can deal with. Oblivion, however, is something that's been festering in my mind.

As the last rays of sun filtered through the trees on the Lawn, students stretched themselves out in downward dog poses, inhaling and exhaling deeply. After several minutes of stretches, they practiced intentional breathing and concentration by sitting still while the rest of the Lawn continued brimming with life and activity. Every Sunday since early September, Muslims United has hosted guided meditations and yoga on the Lawn for their club and students of all backgrounds from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Esfuerzos anuales de los organizadores, el Proyecto Lua y Sin Barreras, fueron afortunados de traer el décimo aniversario del festival.

The Newcomb Ballroom was brimming with anticipation Wednesday evening as students ambled in and took their seats in front of dual screens, framing golden balloons and a single podium. Sharply-dressed students bustled around in the adjacent ballroom in preparation for big presentations. Administrators, including Associate Dean of Students Vicki Gist and Alex Winkoski, assistant director of Multicultural Student Services, were also in attendance. The evening represented eight weeks of dedicated research and preparation by the fifth Latinx Leadership Institute cohort at the University.

The University’s Days on the Lawn have been in full swing since April 4. The warm weather has opened the curtains on Grounds as orange and blue balloons accompany blooming trees. Tour groups of enthusiastic prospective students accompanied by equally eager parents attempt to catch a small glimpse into student life on Grounds. Remarkably, this is the first year since 2019 that DOTL has been hosted in-person.
