The Queer Student Union has overcome fear, prejudice and discrimination to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and recognition for the past half century. Colorful and lively celebrations have taken place around Grounds to commemorate this historic milestone. In light of this anniversary, members of the University community have reflected on the early and difficult past of the organization, what they have achieved and what they still strive to accomplish.

Journalism is ingrained in society. We may not always realize it, but journalism is an essential part of our day-to-day lives and we are inextricably bound to it. Whether that means reading The Cavalier Daily, skimming over news network notifications or watching the news religiously on television, we are all reliant on receiving information from the press. Most importantly, we rely on our media being truthful.

No matter what I do, I always seem to inevitably bump into them — U.Va. tour groups. Hordes of prospective students and parents shuffling around in pursuit of a peppy University Guide bouncing around the sidewalk telling them all about the wonders of the University. If I’m close enough to overhear, I become absorbed into the demonstration. Sometimes, I even find myself becoming convinced by the guide to come attend the University before I realize, “Oh wait, I already am a student.”

How do you self-care? For most people, including myself, self-care entails just letting go. After a long week of constant work, stress and headaches, I decide it’s time for some self-care. I’ll toss my homework aside and do whatever I please. I’ll delete all the homework tabs on my browser and go straight to Netflix. Bags of chips and cookies quickly replace notes and textbooks on my desk, and sooner or later I whip out some clay masks to rub onto my face. This all usually takes place after an approximately two-hour long nap. All in the name of looking after my mental health and staying sane — right?

The transition from Zoom University to all in-person classes has been jarring for many of us here at the University. As a second year, I often feel more like a first year as I attend large college lectures and classes for the first time. One particular sentiment that several of my peers and I share is the utter shock of seeing the sheer number of people on Grounds. I didn’t know that so many people were students here!

What is the worth of a handwritten letter? In today’s fast-paced world, it can feel like letters are outdated and useless. What’s the point of sending a letter when you can just text or email instantly? We can even call and video conference to see and speak with friends around the world. But despite this age of instant connection, I feel like there is still something lacking in the world of online communication.

Dear Cecy, you're going to have a hard time. Right around now, you have just graduated high school via your living room TV’s broadcast of a virtual recording. You’re with your family at home, and the only bright side you can see from an online graduation is that you were able to munch on chips and dip while watching it. But you’re optimistic — you can’t wait to go off to college to make new friends and do new things while living away from home. You’re a little unsure, though. You’re going to college during a global pandemic, and you have no idea what to expect.

The notorious holiday of Cinco de Mayo is coming up on Wednesday, and I have a bone to pick with it. Soon enough, there will be gaudy sombreros and fake moustaches lining the shelves of party stores as we near this ridiculous holiday.

Many of us have had the experience of owning a pet at some point in our lives. Whether it be man’s best friend, a cat or even a fish, pets enrich our lives. I had the privilege and honor of owning a pet hamster, Nacho, when I was six years old.

This month marked one year since we began our now-infamous quarantine. About one year ago, I had my last day of high school on an unremarkable Thursday without even knowing it. The beginning of quarantine, however, offered us the opportunity to begin new routines and do our best to stay healthy.

Art has taught me that sometimes, you just need to look at something through a new lens to gain an appreciation for it. My journey to this realization began when I was young. My older sister displayed a high proficiency for art, so my family thought that maybe I also possessed artistic skill. They placed me in the same summer art camps with my sister in hopes of cultivating some hidden talent within me. Spoiler alert — it never came out.

There are few things in life that are timeless — writing thank you notes, weathered paperback books and Polaroids. Even though the phenomenon began in 1948, the Polaroid and other similar instant cameras still hold prominence today, using self-developing film to produce the print of a picture taken shortly beforehand. The incredible ability to instantly capture a moment and make it tangible opens the door to thousands of possibilities — immortalizing memories, moments, emotions, celebrations and even the most mundane of occasions.

Do you remember the times when we would devour books in mere hours or days? I miss the moments when we would go home after school and jump into bed with the latest book we snagged from the library, ready to read it all in one sitting. I miss those chilly October mornings spent wandering through the aisles of the Scholastic Book Fair just wishing I could take everything home. It seemed like there were never enough books to read! Authors like Mary Pope Osborne, Rick Riordan, John Green and J.K. Rowling all gave us unforgettable narratives that always left us wanting for more — more books.

Let’s face it, we have guilty pleasures. We all have these niche interests or hobbies that make us happy and give us some serotonin. The difference, however, between “normal” hobbies and guilty pleasures is that the latter is accompanied by some sort of stigma. When we are participating in a guilty pleasure, we might feel embarrassed to an extent. We might keep it a secret from those around us. It’s a struggle that we bear every single day without even realizing it. With all the added stress and hassles of our lives, our little habits can sometimes be our only respite to the chaos outside our windows. But, it feels like even when we’re trying to get a break from everything, we bear a little stress because we feel ashamed about our interests. This all boils down to one question — should we feel bad about them?

It has come to my attention that even though we are in a pandemic, life doesn’t slow down. We’re still constantly bombarded by the news with 24/7 updates on the infection rate, the economic status of the country and weary reporters discussing the latest disastrous town hall. On top of that, we’re restricted to the confines of our rooms, which makes it even more difficult to find solace amid the chaos.

I can imagine your expression right now. You look at my profile picture, then my name, then back to the picture and squint a little. Maybe if you tilt your head, you’ll be able to see it. Blink. Blink again. You think, “I mean, I guess?”
