Virginia men’s soccer put its season-best four-match unbeaten streak on the line Friday night in Charlottesville, going toe-to-toe with Pittsburgh at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (7-3-3-, 3-2-1 ACC) pushed that streak to five, using a pair of first-half goals to stun the No. 11 Panthers (5-4-3, 2-2-2 ACC) 2-1 and earn their third consecutive win against Pittsburgh.

A tent encampment of an estimated 30 tents and over 50 people has amassed in Market Street Park, located one block from Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. The settlement formed following Charlottesville City Manager Sam Sanders’ decision to lift the park’s closing time, allowing residents to stay overnight. The curfew, however, will be reinstated Oct. 21 — just one month after it was lifted.

After a devastating 26-29 loss against the University of Miami, the Cavaliers still remain behind the pack with a 2-6 record. Facing pressure from outraged alumni commenting on every Virginia-sports-affiliated social media account and despondent students, Coach Tony Elliot finally let it slip — the record is actually part of the ritual sacrifice to the ACC Commissioner James J. Phillips.

“Say it loud, say it clear, transphobes are not welcome here.” The chant rumbled over Minor Hall Wednesday night as over a hundred students, faculty and community members gathered to protest a visit by controversial journalist Abigail Shrier — whose most recent book critiques what Shrier says is a “trans epidemic.”

This vegetarian chili recipe is a great option for any college student tackling a particularly chaotic schedule this semester. Personally, during the week, my days tend to be busy — filled with classes, homework, extracurriculars and the occasional nap — and in the evening, I return to my apartment starving. It’s rare, however, that I muster up the energy to cook an elaborate, delicious dinner.

After recent losses to Boston College and Clemson, Virginia women’s volleyball was unable to return to its winning ways, falling to No. 12 Georgia Tech in a tight five-set matchup Sunday in Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers (8-8, 1-5 ACC) exchanged sets with the Yellow Jackets (14-2, 5-1 ACC) for the first four segments of play, but Virginia would lose the fifth and final set 15-13, a heartbreaking conclusion to an otherwise strong showing against a nationally ranked Georgia Tech team.

It’s a classic college conundrum — fostering new and old friendships often includes buying food, tickets or other items. For me, it feels like there’s an expectation to spend money every time I hang out with people and I can’t always afford to spend money each week to maintain my relationships. Besides, real friendships should be built on more than just costly outings. Here are some ways I’ve found to spend time with friends without spending money and making priceless memories at the same time.

Virginia returns home this Saturday as they take on an in-state opponent in William and Mary at noon. The Cavaliers (0-5, 0-2 ACC) have had one of the toughest starts to the season they could have imagined. They have yet to pick up a win, but three of the five games have been incredibly close. The Tribe (4-1, 2-1 CAA) are ranked No. 9 in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), and had won 11 straight regular season games, but are coming off a close loss to Elon. William and Mary is headed by Coach Mike London, who as many Virginia fans may remember, coached the Cavaliers from 2010 to 2015. Virginia will aim to hand their former coach a loss on Saturday afternoon.

As we trudge through midterm-season, I am sure students have had their fair share of moments in class — sometimes a little cliche — where they simply wanted to rip their hair out, me included. These are a few tried and tested classroom phrases that uniquely irk me each time I hear them. But now as an upperclassman, I’ve learned that it’s not too hard to sit through, because at the end of the day, we can all commiserate — and laugh — together. Next time you hear one of these in class, know that students across majors and disciplines are probably all feeling the same way.

Since the National Women’s Soccer League was founded in 2012, Virginia women’s soccer has had at least one player selected in the draft every year. The Cavaliers are one of only two programs to accomplish this feat, alongside Stanford. Coach Steve Swanson has engineered a system that consistently produces talent, enabling a seamless transition to the next level. This decade of dominance indicates that Virginia is the model collegiate program for women’s soccer players who have their eyes set on playing at the professional level in the United States. With the NWSL playoffs on the horizon, it may be time to brush up on where Virginia alumnae are situated within the league.

Few topics spark more contentious discourse than the issue of free speech, especially on college campuses. Schools across the country struggle to strike a balance between the free exchange of ideas and cultivating an environment where students from diverse backgrounds can live and learn. Here in Charlottesville, the University ranks number 6 in the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression’s free speech ranking, if such a thing can be ranked numerically. It’s a fairly high ranking, and a student published in the Jefferson Independent claims the ranking gives the false impression that “students of different mindsets are dancing around a campfire, holding hands and singing folk songs.” This statement underscores a failure to grasp what the purpose of free speech is — it is not about superficial harmony in the wake of conflicting viewpoints, but rather the use of reason and debate to learn, grow, build consensus and move society forward. Free speech, then, may entitle people to platform problematic individuals, but it does not entitle these people — or the controversial speakers they invite — to any sort of welcoming, campfire-dancing student body.
