Nothing says “early season basketball” like two undefeated teams facing off at a neutral site somewhere very far away. Last November, Virginia took on Wisconsin and West Virginia in Fort Myers, Fla. This year, the Cavaliers (3-0, 0-0 ACC) are going even further from John Paul Jones Arena to take on No. 11 Tennessee in Nassau, Bahamas to open the Continental Tire Baha Mar Championship Thursday at 9:30 p.m. on CBS. The Volunteers (4-0, 0-0 SEC) will present a great challenge to a Virginia squad that has performed well but has yet to face elite competition.

On the heels of a heartbreaking loss in the ACC quarterfinals to Syracuse, Virginia field hockey managed to snag an at-large bid during the selection show — staving off the end of the season a little longer. The Cavaliers (13–4, 6–2 ACC) are slated to face off against No. 10 Michigan Friday in Evanston, Ill. Should Virginia conquer the Wolverines (15-4, 5-3 Big Ten), it will almost certainly face No. 2 Northwestern, the host of the first two rounds. The road to a second consecutive Final Four appearance is arduous.

Most — if not all — Virginia men’s basketball fans are accustomed to seeing No. 2 donned by Reece Beekman, a program legend. But like most hallmarks of this program these days, things change. No. 2 is now worn by junior forward Elijah Saunders, who shares little in common with Beekman, except that they both represent the Cavaliers with pride and class.

No. 3 Virginia field hockey took on No. 11 Syracuse in the ACC Quarterfinals Tuesday at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Cavaliers (13-3, 6-2 ACC) entered the matchup having not lost to the Orange (12-5, 4-4 ACC) since 2015 — including a trademark victory Oct. 18. As a bonus ahead of the game, the week had gone swimmingly for Virginia. The Cavaliers won an exciting overtime battle at Wake Forest Friday, and Senior back Jans Croon was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year Monday. Unfortunately, that momentum was squashed by the Orange in the form of a 1-0 defeat.

In a clash of national championship contenders, Virginia field hockey journeyed down to Chapel Hill, N.C. Friday for a showdown against North Carolina. Most of the competition played out in the second half of the game, during which the No. 4 Cavaliers (12-3, 5-2 ACC) could not find their footing as the No. 2 Tar Heels (13-0, 6-0 ACC) continued their undefeated season with a 4-0 stomping of the visitors.

No. 4 Virginia will take on No. 2 North Carolina Friday in one of the most anticipated matchups of the year in Chapel Hill, N.C. As the end of the regular season approaches, both teams are gearing up for a high-stakes match that could have major implications for conference standings and seedings for the ACC Tournament. With a win, the Cavaliers would pass the Tar Heels in the conference standings and claim the top spot in the ACC. The stakes are obviously high and pulling off the win will not be easy, but a victory could be the crown jewel of Coach Ole Keusgen’s inaugural season as the leader of this program.
