No. 5 Virginia women’s squash traveled to Philadelphia, Pa. this past weekend to compete in the 2023 National Collegiate Women’s Team Squash Championships. The Cavaliers (13-7) competed in the Howe Championship bracket, the top bracket for the CSA tournament, for the second consecutive year. Although the squad only finished fourth, it was the best finish in program history.

The No. 7 Cavaliers (20-4, 12-3 ACC) just barely downed the Cardinals (3-23, 1-14 ACC) in a surprisingly narrow 61-58 final Wednesday night in Louisville, Ky. Coming off a hard-fought home win against Duke, Virginia was able to stave off a feisty Louisville team who have shown life as of late, despite just a single win in conference play all season long.

No. 7 Virginia women’s tennis spent the weekend in Seattle, Wash. competing in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. The first round saw the Cavaliers (6-2, 0-0 ACC) match up Friday against No. 12 Michigan (6-1, 0-0 Big Ten). After suffering a 2-4 loss, the team competed in two consolation matches where they fell 1-4 to No. 8 Pepperdine (3-2, 0-0 West Coast) Saturday but earned their sole win of the weekend Sunday against No. 17 San Diego (2-5, 0-0 West Coast).

In its first-ever matchup with Michigan, No. 1 Virginia was able to defend Klöckner Stadium and extend its home winning streak to ten straight games with a 17-13 victory Saturday. The Cavaliers (1-0, 0-0 ACC) never trailed against a tough Wolverines (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten) squad that refused to go away until the final buzzer.

No. 7 Virginia women’s tennis (5-0, 0-0 ACC) defeated William & Mary (2-1, 0-0 CAA) 7-0 Sunday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville. Virginia was coming off a pair of victories at ITA Kickoff Weekend, moving up in rank from No. 8 to now No. 7.

The Virginia men’s tennis team split their most recent weekend matchups, falling to No. 5 Kentucky, but recovering well against Radford. The Wildcats (8-0, 0-0 SEC) proved to be too much for the Cavaliers (7-1, 0-0 ACC), winning a tight battle that was a rematch of last year’s national championship match. However, the Cavaliers held their heads high and bounced back against the Highlanders (0-3, 0-0 Big South) to secure a win last weekend.

Last year, Virginia was denied a chance to compete for their third consecutive title after losing in the national quarterfinals to a Maryland team that ranked among the best in the history of college lacrosse. A team on its way to a perfect 18-0 season with a whopping six players drafted into the Premier Lacrosse League that year proved to be a buzzsaw in the Cavaliers’ hopes at a three-peat.

Virginia basketball is in the midst of a dramatic resurgence. The Cavaliers (18-4, 10-3 ACC) are currently situated at No. 8 in the latest AP men’s basketball poll and have risen as high as No. 2 this season. Coach Tony Bennett’s squad has come a long way from last season’s disappointing end — a loss in the National Invitation Tournament after missing out on the NCAA Tournament for the first time in almost 10 years, excluding the pandemic-disrupted year.

No. 8 Virginia women’s tennis swept its opponents over a weekend-long tournament in Charlottesville at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend. To reach the final, the Cavaliers (4-0) first knocked off Washington State Friday, then defeated South Carolina Saturday to claim the championship. Junior Hibah Shaikh had a particularly strong weekend, winning both of her singles matches in straight sets to aid the team to victory.

From top to bottom, the athletics department is gearing up for tournament bids, title runs and potentially a bit of madness in March. After the 2021 season, two football programs with prestige bowl appearances in the last decade had regressed to mediocrity and were without head coaches. Both programs had veteran dual-threat quarterbacks in place and poached respected coaches from rival programs. One of the coaches, Sonny Dykes, led Texas Christian from 5-7 to 13-2 and a national championship game appearance in 2022. Meanwhile, Virginia (3-7, 1-6 ACC) sputtered under newly appointed head coach Tony Elliott.

As the fall semester nears an end, all of Virginia’s athletic programs that compete primarily in the fall have seen their seasons come to a close. Women’s soccer and field hockey sustained a season of success, men’s soccer rediscovered its footing as an elite program and cross country and volleyball made significant strides forward.

No. 3-seeded Virginia women’s soccer saw its season come to a close at the hands of No. 1 UCLA in heartbreaking fashion Saturday night. The Cavaliers (16-4-3, 6-2-2 ACC) found a second-half equalizer before ultimately conceding the decisive goal to the Bruins (20-2-1, 9-2 PAC 12) in the first period of overtime.

After returning to the top-five of the AP Poll for the first time since being ranked No. 4 in the 2020 Preseason AP Poll, Virginia men’s basketball showed why it belongs among the nation’s elite Friday night in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers (5-0, 0-0 ACC) took down the Hawks (2-4, 0-0 MEAC) with relative ease, winning by a score of 72-45 back at home after capturing the Continental Tire Main Event Championship last weekend in Las Vegas, Nev.

Virginia men’s basketball will be looking for its first win over Baylor in program history when the two sides meet in the semifinals of the Continental Tire Challenge — now in its ninth year — Friday with the winner advancing to the finals to play either No. 8 UCLA or No. 19 Illinois. The No. 16 Cavaliers (2-0, 0-0 ACC) and the No. 5 Bears (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) each enter with undefeated seasons on the line, but one of the two will leave with a blemish in Las Vegas, Nev.

No. 11 Virginia men’s soccer team battled competitively in a match against ACC semifinalist challenger No. 3 Syracuse Wednesday. Despite a stellar offensive and defensive performance from the Cavaliers (10-4-4, 5-1-2 ACC), who battled the Orange (13-2-4, 5-1-2 ACC) to a 2-2 draw, they were unable to finish the job in the penalty shootout.

Appearing in its 29th straight NCAA tournament, No. 11 Virginia women’s soccer will begin its run for a national championship Saturday evening when it takes on Fairleigh Dickinson for the second time this season. After being knocked out of the tournament fairly early as a No.1 seed last season, the Cavaliers (13-3-3, 6-2-2 ACC) are hopeful to advance to the College Cup this season.

Graduate student forward Sam Brunelle is no stranger to John Paul Jones Arena. She grew up a short drive away in Greene County, Va. and became a Virginia women’s basketball fan at the tail end of legendary Coach Debbie Ryan’s tenure. As she grew up, Brunelle made frequent trips to John Paul Jones with her family, getting so close to the program that she even served as a ball girl, dreaming of the day she might get the chance to take the court herself in an orange and blue uniform.
