No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer (8-0-1, 1-0-0 ACC) sent a shockwave through the world of women’s college soccer Saturday night when it defeated No. 2 North Carolina (7-2-0, 0-1-0 ACC) by a score of 3-2.

The Virginia women’s soccer team has had one Coach in the 21st century — Steve Swanson. In this time period, the team has not missed an NCAA Tournament, appearing in 19 Rounds of 16, seven quarterfinals, three College Cups — the Final Four for college soccer — and one championship match.

Virginia football enters this new season with tons of roster turnover induced by the departure of Bronco Mendenhall and subsequent hiring of Tony Elliott as head coach. After Mendenhall’s departure, several key players transferred and others graduated and moved on to the National Football League. Meanwhile, Elliott brought an influx of Football Championship Subdivision talent through the portal and will focus on promoting internal talent, particularly in the trenches on the offensive and defensive line.

College football is right around the corner, and Virginia is hoping to regain its footing in the ACC Coastal Division after reaching the conference championship in 2019. Despite a mediocre 6-6 record in 2021, the Cavaliers have managed to retain several key stars all while entering the first year in the tenure of new Coach Tony Elliott — formerly the offensive coordinator at Clemson.

Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving sent 20 swimmers to compete in the 2022 Phillips 66 National Championships, which took place Tuesday through Saturday. Both collegiate and professional athletes from across the country traveled to the William Wollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine, Calif. to compete against the nation’s best.

Shocking news pulsated through the sporting world earlier this summer when USC and UCLA announced that the schools were in deep talks to join the Big Ten conference beginning in 2024. The next day, the current members of the Big Ten voted to accept the institutions as members, bringing the conference’s total to 16 teams that now stretch from New Jersey to Los Angeles.

Various Virginia sports teams have had an eventful summer so far. The ACC announced a major conference scheduling update for football, and track and field and women’s soccer athletes are making a name for themselves on the global stage. Additionally, several Cavalier teams saw success in the transfer and recruiting realm, and Virginia capped off another strong overall year in athletics with an 11th-place finish in the Director’s Cup.

After helping Virginia women’s swimming and diving to its second consecutive national championship, three Cavalier swimmers returned to action to compete at the 19th FINA World Championships in Budapest to represent Team USA, which was led by Virginia Coach Todd DeSorbo.

The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams sent several student athletes to Eugene, Ore. to compete in the NCAA Track and Field Championships from Wednesday through Saturday. The Cavaliers earned various accolades, the greatest of which came from junior thrower Claudio Romero, who won an NCAA Championship in the discus throw event.

The No. 7 Virginia men’s tennis team (28-5, 12-0 ACC) took down No. 8 Kentucky (26-8, 10-2 SEC) to cap off a stellar tournament run this Sunday, earning its fifth overall national championship — all of which were earned in the past decade. The Cavaliers also defeated No. 2 Florida (26-3, 12-0 SEC) and No. 6 Tennessee (26-8, 8-4 SEC) prior to defeating the Wildcats in the championship match.

For the first time in three years, the University will host normal Final Exercises this weekend. Among those leaving will be about a quarter of the school’s 750 student athletes. The athletes in the Class of 2022 have given their all to the University’s athletics programs and given some of the best results in school history as a result. The last four years have seen an unprecedented level of success for the Cavaliers.

Virginia softball lost 5-3 to Florida State in their first round game of the ACC Tournament on Thursday. The Cavaliers (27-24, 13-11 ACC) were the sixth seed of the tournament while the Seminoles (50-5, 19-5 ACC) were seeded third.

Virginia men’s lacrosse travels to Providence, R.I. Saturday to take on No. 8 Brown in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. The Cavaliers (11-3, 5-1 ACC) enter this postseason in search of their third consecutive NCAA Championship while the Bears (10-5, 4-2 Ivy League) look to continue their impressive season after becoming the Ivy League regular-season champions.
