As two seasons of sports continue at the University, students and fans can enjoy a sporting event nearly every day of the week. Several teams have been excelling, with men’s basketball continuing to dominate competition and men’s lacrosse picking up two dramatic overtime wins on the road in consecutive weeks. This week though, I decided to spotlight four individuals who have shined in their respective sports.

Junior Jordan Scott and senior Bridget Guy have been essential to the success of Virginia’s track and field program. Both Scott and Guy, along with junior transfer Brenton Foster, recently qualified for the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. Both athletes have ambitious goals for their future, which they are positioned to achieve. Here is a glimpse into their backgrounds, track careers, interests and motivations, along with a review of their accomplishments thus far.

The Virginia men’s swimming and diving team concluded ACC Championships Saturday in third place with 1,018 points, behind second place Louisville and first place N.C. State. Coming in seeded and placed seventh based on the diving team’s conference results a week earlier, the Cavaliers put together multiple record-setting days and a total of 14 All-ACC honors to secure a podium finish. The standout performance came from senior Brendan Casey, finishing the meet with a total of 92 points and in a three-way tie for top point scorer.

Three Cavaliers will be competing at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships March 8 and 9 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Redshirt senior Bridget Guy, junior Jordan Scott and junior transfer Brenton Foster each qualified in their individual field events.

This weekend the No. 10 Virginia women’s squash team headed to the Kurtz Cup in Hartford, Conn., which serves as the B Division of the College Squash Association Team Championships. The Cavaliers came into the tournament red-hot, winning 12 of their last 13 matches dating back to the start of December.

The Virginia women’s swimming and diving team traveled to the Greensboro Aquatic Center last weekend, looking to claim their 11th ACC title in 12 years and 16th in program history. The Cavaliers entered the four-day battle royale with the No. 5 seed nationally, behind NC State at No. 4. From Wednesday to Saturday, Virginia consistently beat out the competition to finish in the silver medal position.

This past weekend, No. 13 Virginia men’s tennis (9-2, 2-1 ACC) attended the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Chicago, Ill. The Cavaliers entered the tournament as the eighth seed after staging major ranked wins against No. 1 Wake Forest and No. 20 Texas A&M the past two months.

Founded in 1976, the Virginia Riding Team is a club sports team open to University students of all years with an interest in riding horses. With 65 riders, 4 coaches and over 30 team horses, the team is a competitive force that has accumulated numerous accolades over the years, including the 2018 American National Riding Commission Novice Championship title and has qualified for 10 American National Riding Commission Championships.

After riding a five-game win streak into the Dunlop Squash top 10, No. 9 Virginia men’s squash (16-7) secured the top seed in the Hoehn Cup — the B division of the College Squash Association National Team Championships — which was hosted this past weekend at Yale University’s Brady Squash Center.

The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams split up for the weekend, traveling to Clemson, S.C., for the Tiger Paw Invite and Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State Classic. Both two-day competitions featured numerous ranked opponents, including top-5 programs such as Florida State, Florida and Texas A&M.

This past weekend, the McArthur Squash Center at Boar’s Head Sports Club hosted the Mid-Atlantic Championships for both the men’s and women’s squash teams. Both teams went undefeated in the tournament, sending them into the top 10 leading into the Virginia Home Round Robin this weekend.

It has been quite some time since the Virginia football team has entered a season with such high expectations. After many years at the cellar of the ACC Coastal, the Cavaliers should now be a favorite to win their division after an 8-5 2018 season that ended with a 28-0 thumping of South Carolina in the Belk Bowl.

For the second year in a row, Virginia football Coach Bronco Mendenhall has his team set to play in a postseason bowl game. Despite losing three of their last four games, the Cavaliers (7-5, 4-4 ACC) enter bowl candidacy with one more win than they did last year, when they were slated to play Navy in the Military Bowl in Annapolis, Md.
