It begins with the Cavaliers earning a spot in the Elite Eight of the ACC to compete for the ACC Women’s Soccer Championship. One week of play, from Oct. 28 to Nov. 4, decides the winner of the ACC. After that, the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Committee will select a field of 64 teams to compete for the National Championship. Thirty-one conference champions qualify automatically and the rest are selected at-large by the committee. With multiple rounds and repeated play, the Cavaliers have a huge road ahead of them as they compete for their first ever national championship title.

Alec Dougherty, Editor: Virginia basketball’s 65-63 victory at No. 4 Duke last season was the biggest statement win of the season, silencing any doubts that the Cavaliers were national title contenders. The Cavaliers completely shut down the Blue Devils’ offense in the first half, but a big comeback brought the game neck-and-neck down to the wire. An unforgettable deep three-pointer by Virginia sophomore guard Ty Jerome sealed the win, as the Cavaliers outlasted a 30-point performance from Duke freshman forward Marvin Bagley III. It was a thrilling win that put Virginia in the driver’s seat towards winning the ACC.

Kanye West made headlines last week for supporting President Donald Trump and his campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.” After a nearly year-long hiatus, the rapper returned to Twitter and rained down a series of tweets about a range of topics from creativity as currency, spreading love and following your own vision. His more politically-charged tweets gained him the most attention. Commentators debated about his mental health and others wrote it off as a publicity stunt for his forthcoming album. Fellow Chicago rapper, Chance the Rapper, also came under fire for defending Kanye on Twitter. The most striking aspect of this controversial episode was the endorsement by the president and others for Kanye. This reaction has been very different than what occurred in response to other celebrities who turned political. Trump’s reaction to both shows the double standard when it comes to celebrities’ speech. In all, celebrities are public figures, but they are also citizens of this country and should be encouraged to stand in their beliefs — regardless of where they fall on the political spectrum.

Alec Dougherty, Editor: This summer will be a crucial stretch for Virginia football as it tries to rework its offense and assimilate its new players into the fold. The team lost arguably their three most valuable players — and team captains — from the past two seasons in quarterback Kurt Benkert, inside linebacker Micah Kiser and free safety Quin Blanding. With a young defense and a new quarterback under certain, changes will be abundant for Coach Bronco Mendenhall’s schemes.

The Virginia men’s tennis team has faced a tough slew of defeats recently, winning only one out of the past seven matches. Part of the reason for such a dismal record was a back loaded schedule, in which the Cavaliers played some of the toughest teams in the nation on the road and No. 1 Wake Forest Demon Deacons (22-2, 11-1 ACC) at home. Virginia was recently able to pull out an upset victory over No. 22 North Carolina State (16-7, 6-6 ACC), but has been unable to put together any other victories since late March.
