The Virginia men’s lacrosse team last week had their final team activity of the fall. With all eyes on Virginia after the departure of lacrosse legend Dom Starsia, this season will be telling for the fate of the program.

Fall 2016 has seen a number of highs and lows for Virginia sports. From the excitement of Leah Smith’s Olympics performance, to football coach Bronco Mendenhall’s first Virginia win (and little success afterwards), to a thrilling beginning to the men’s basketball season, Cavaliers fans have experienced somewhat of a roller coaster. Now three months into the year, here are the Cavalier Daily Sports Staff’s favorite moments:

After a couple weeks off, the Virginia swimming and diving teams return to action this weekend at the University of Georgia Fall Invitational. The meet will feature strong teams such as the University of Michigan, the University of Georgia and the University of California, Berkeley.

A solid first few weeks of play has the Virginia women’s basketball team confident that they can build a special season as they continue to grow as a team. The Cavaliers (5-1) will face their biggest test of the season Thursday when they travel to Evanston, Ill. to take on Northwestern as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

The Virginia men’s soccer team traveled across the country to continue its quest for a national championship with a third-round match against the reigning defending national champions Stanford.

In the dying minutes of a deadlocked round of 16 matchup against Michigan, the Virginia men’s club soccer team found hope. With fewer than six minutes remaining on the clock, sophomore midfielder Tysen Tresness broke the tie, and propelled the Cavaliers on to the next round of play.

For the 36th consecutive season, the Virginia men’s soccer team is gearing up to play in the NCAA Tournament Sunday. After earning the No. 12 seed in the bracket, the Cavaliers enjoyed a first round bye, and will now host Vermont in the second round. Winning Sunday would advance the Cavaliers (10-3-5, 3-2-3 ACC) into the third round, which would outdo last year’s second-round exit from the tournament.

After coming off two disappointing losses, the Virginia wrestling team is returning home to host a tri-meet Sunday against Maryland and Lock Haven at Memorial Gymnasium.

Since its 7-0-0 start when senior goalie Morgan Stearns did not allow a single goal, the Virginia women’s soccer team has been far from dominant. After being shutout several times, the Cavaliers bowed out in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championships to eventual runner-up North Carolina — to finish with a record of 14-4-2.

Fresh off of an ACC Tournament title, No. 7 Virginia looks to continue its fine form in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The final was the Cavaliers’ (15-7, 3-3 ACC) first finals berth since 2009. It was also the first ACC title ever in field hockey, an impressive accomplishment.

No. 17 Virginia men’s soccer hosts NC State in the first round of the ACC Tournament Wednesday. After ending the season on a nine-match unbeaten streak, the Cavaliers (9-2-5, 3-2-3 ACC) head into the postseason looking for another deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

Thanks to senior captain Jimmy Stanger’s birdie on the final hole, the No. 7 Virginia men’s golf team finished tied for first place with co-champion No. 23 Texas in the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate this past weekend. The birdie also propelled Stanger up to finish tied for first place individually out of 90 competing golfers.

Virginia‘s success in sports as of late has been well noted. The Cavaliers won the Capital One Cup for best men’s sports teams for the 2014-2015 season, and have averaged sixth in the Directors Cup over the past three years, a nationwide ranking of all a university’s sports teams. The accomplishments of teams like baseball and basketball have been covered substantially, but the contributions of the men’s soccer team have flown under the radar.
