There is something special brewing on the roads, trails and tall grass of Charlottesville — as their regular seasons come to a close, Virginia’s men’s and women’s cross country teams find themselves ranked 10th and seventh, respectively, in the USTFCCCA Coaches’ National Poll. The mastermind behind it all is Vin Lananna, Virginia director of track and field and cross country . Lananna is a legend of the running community, with perhaps the greatest coaching resume in collegiate athletics, elite recruiting and talent development abilities and a clear vision for the Cavaliers’ program.

No. 15 Virginia bested a competitive field Sunday to win the Golf Club of Georgia (GCG) Collegiate Title, the final tournament of their fall season, bouncing back from a disappointing fourth-place finish at the Hamptons Intercollegiate earlier this month. The Cavaliers recorded 30 birdies in the final round to make up for an 11-shot difference, a feat that saw them cruise to victory.

When one thinks of Virginia lacrosse, the first name that comes to mind is Julie Myers. She led the Cavalier women’s lacrosse team for the past 28 seasons and never once failed to qualify for postseason play — a massively impressive achievement. Accounting for Myers’ years as a player and assistant coach, she had been with Virginia for 37 years. Myers is synonymous with winning — and therefore, so were the Cavaliers. So after Meyer announced her departure from athletics, a giant hole opened at the University.

Participating in the College World Series marks a successful season no matter the result in Omaha, Neb. However, Coach Brian O’Connor felt that being the first College World Series team to be eliminated meant falling short of expectations.

Virginia women’s soccer held on to a 1-1 draw after conceding an equalizer at No. 9 Clemson Thursday. The Cavaliers (5-2-5, 0-2-3 ACC) started the action with a goal from sophomore midfielder Jill Flammia, and the Tigers (9-1-3, 3-1-1 ACC) thereon out dominated possession and responded with a goal from junior forward Renee Lyles.

Virginia returns home this Saturday as they take on an in-state opponent in William and Mary at noon. The Cavaliers (0-5, 0-2 ACC) have had one of the toughest starts to the season they could have imagined. They have yet to pick up a win, but three of the five games have been incredibly close. The Tribe (4-1, 2-1 CAA) are ranked No. 9 in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), and had won 11 straight regular season games, but are coming off a close loss to Elon. William and Mary is headed by Coach Mike London, who as many Virginia fans may remember, coached the Cavaliers from 2010 to 2015. Virginia will aim to hand their former coach a loss on Saturday afternoon.

Virginia men’s lacrosse picked up a massive commitment from attackman Brendan Millon Tuesday evening. This means that for the fifth time in the previous seven recruiting cycles, the Cavaliers have landed the No. 1 recruit in the class.

Since the National Women’s Soccer League was founded in 2012, Virginia women’s soccer has had at least one player selected in the draft every year. The Cavaliers are one of only two programs to accomplish this feat, alongside Stanford. Coach Steve Swanson has engineered a system that consistently produces talent, enabling a seamless transition to the next level. This decade of dominance indicates that Virginia is the model collegiate program for women’s soccer players who have their eyes set on playing at the professional level in the United States. With the NWSL playoffs on the horizon, it may be time to brush up on where Virginia alumnae are situated within the league.

Coming off of a quarterfinals exit against Florida in last year’s NCAA Championship, Virginia has supplanted itself right back amongst the nation’s best with a No. 13 ranking heading into the beginning of the season. The Cavaliers took convincing wins at the Streamsong Invitational and the Hamptons Intercollegiate last year along with a string of wins and top-five finishes for individual players. With similar hopes ahead for the fall and spring seasons, here is a quick look into some of the old faces, as well as a few new ones, that are sure to make an impact on this year’s squad.

With four games under its belt in the 2023 season, No. 6 Virginia field hockey looks primed to take a leap forward, even as the standard for the program is remarkably high. Though the Cavaliers (3-1, 0-0 ACC) regularly field a top 10 squad that dominates in the regular season, postseason woes have defined their recent years. Their main opposition has come in the form of conference rival and reigning NCAA Champions No. 2 North Carolina. The Tar Heels (3-1, 0-0 ACC) have stifled Virginia’s ACC Championship aspirations four times in the past six seasons. However, this year the Cavaliers have shown that they have a chance to change the narrative and reclaim the conference title for the first time since 2016 — and maybe go further still.

When Virginia men’s lacrosse’s current class of graduate students stepped onto Grounds in 2018, the lacrosse program was desperately looking to find its footing. The Cavaliers, having already captured three national championships since 2000, found themselves in unfamiliar territory after winning only one of 19 ACC contests from 2013 to 2017. But as the 2018 class graduates, they leave behind a legacy of winning, proven by two more national championship trophies for the program.

After an improved 2022-2023 season, the Virginia volleyball team is pushing closer towards a winning record while continuing to build a unified program under Coach Shannon Wells. Last year’s 12-17 (4-14 ACC) record in Wells’ second campaign with the Cavaliers points towards progress in comparison to the 8-20 (1-17 ACC) record from her first season as head coach. Now, a slew of returners could help catapult the Cavaliers into the middle of the Atlantic Coastal Conference standings.

No. 7 Virginia flew into Omaha with its eyes set on winning their second National Championship in program history. Confidence was high following a sweep through the regionals and a performance in the Super Regionals in which it outscored Duke by 19 runs. The starting pitching, which had been a question mark for the Cavaliers (50-15, 19-11 ACC) had been nearly perfect, and thus Virginia looked as if it lacked any holes entering the eight-team tournament. Unfortunately for the Cavaliers, many of the bats went cold and late-inning pitching proved costly, leading to their elimination from this year’s College World Series.

No. 7 Virginia baseball clinched a berth to the College World Series over the weekend, marking its sixth appearance in Omaha, Neb. in program history. While the Cavaliers (50-13, 19-11 ACC) dominated the competition for most of the season, the path to compete for a national championship was not always certain. What at one point looked like a disappointing repeat of the 2022 season where Virginia could not overcome late season struggles and fell in the Regional round turned into exhilaration at Disharoon Park Sunday afternoon.

Following an early exit from the ACC Tournament at the hands of North Carolina, the quickly approaching NCAA Tournament represents Virginia baseball’s last chance to get its hands on some hardware. Cavaliers fans may see parallels between the current outfit and the 2022 team that stumbled out of the big dance at NCAA Regionals, but they should rest assured that coach Brian O’Connor and company are well-equipped to avoid a second strike of lightning.

No. 2 Virginia men’s lacrosse saw their 2023 campaign come to a close Saturday in heartbreaking fashion after an overtime game winner from No. 3 Notre Dame. It was an incredibly close game throughout, with neither team able to garner more than a two-goal lead, but in their third matchup of the season, it was the Fighting Irish (13-2, 4-2 ACC) who came out on top, defeating the Cavaliers (13-4, 4-2 ACC) 13-12 in overtime.

Virginia won its sixth men’s tennis national title in the last 11 years this weekend in Orlando, Fla., defeating heavyweight after heavyweight in the process. The runner-ups No. 3 Ohio State defeated the Cavaliers on two separate occasions back in February — winning 4-1 in Charlottesville and then 4-0 at the ITA National Team Indoors. The second loss to Ohio State on February 19th would be the final time the Cavaliers lost this season as Virginia turned its season around and dismantled the Buckeyes for the championship.
