Saturday, the area outside the University chapel was invaded by police who were tasked with clearing the encampment for Gaza which was deemed to be an “unlawful assembly.” There were many heavily armed police officers. There was pepper spray which was wielded against demonstrators. There were riot police who marched in tandem, first against people within the Gaza encampment and then against a crowd of onlookers. It was a chaotic and deeply disturbing scene. But this violent chaos was not inevitable, nor was it started by student protesters. Rather, it arose as a direct result of University and police action.

It all started with nothing more than a camera and a dream. I arrived on Grounds in 2020 starry-eyed with one goal in mind — making connections in a time full of distance. I had been a photographer for my high school newspaper, so when I saw that The Cavalier Daily had a photo desk, I thought it seemed like a good fit. What I didn’t know was how much I would learn from my time on The Cavalier Daily — it would have a drastic impact in developing my leadership skills and changing the way that I view the little moments of life. What I didn’t know was how quickly a group of people could go from strangers to best friends, much less how these people would come to feel like home.

The ACC Championship Bracket was released Sunday, and Virginia softball has earned the 4-seed in the tournament — the program’s highest seed since being seeded No. 2 in 2010. The Cavaliers (32-17, 15-9 ACC) will take on No. 5 Clemson in the first round in Durham, N.C, earning the seeding nod over the Tigers (33-16, 15-9 ACC) thanks to a series victory over Clemson in March.

At 1 a.m. after a late-night exam, I ventured to The White Spot with my date for the first time after hearing about the fan-favorite diner many times prior. As we walked into the home of the famous $7.00 Gus Burger, we were delighted to find comforting grilled classics and a bustling atmosphere. The White Spot is a timeless diner for Charlottesville residents and students looking for a greasy spoon infused with University spirit.

No. 2 Virginia men’s tennis — the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament — hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament this weekend at the Boar's Head Resort in Charlottesville. Having prepared for this moment all season, the Cavaliers (24-5, 12-0 ACC) easily dominated over NJIT (19-6, 0-0 AEC) Friday and VCU (16-10, 2-0 Atlantic 10) Saturday to secure a spot in the Round of 16.

Over 50 police officers, including state troopers in riot gear, cleared the pro-Palestinian encampment near the University chapel Saturday afternoon and detained at least 25 protesters. The removal of the encampment marked the end of a days-long protest that called on the University to disclose its investment portfolio and divest from institutions benefiting from Israeli occupation in Palestine, among other demands.

While Virginia women’s lacrosse has had its share of lows in 2024 — the most recent one being a 19-4 defeat at the hands of No. 4 Syracuse in the ACC Tournament — the highs have been noticeably more frequent. Much of that is because of co-captain and senior attacker Morgan Schwab, who has tallied 18 goals and 53 assists in just 18 games played this season. Schwab brings an offensive presence that can’t be ignored, as just this season she has broken the all-time and single-game assists records for the program. The senior’s contributions on and off the scoresheet are crucial to the No. 7 Cavaliers’ (14-4, 6-3 ACC) success and will largely determine how far they go in the NCAA Tournament.

Friday’s rematch against No. 1 seed Notre Dame gave No. 4 seed Virginia a chance to bounce back and improve upon its performance from last weekend — one riddled by small mistakes from the Cavaliers (10-5, 1-3 ACC) as the Fighting Irish (11-1, 4-0 ACC) rallied late in the game to win 11-9. Instead, Notre Dame put on a show, scoring six goals in the first quarter and holding the lead the entire game on its way to an 18-9 win in the ACC Tournament semifinals in Charlotte, N.C.’s American Legion Memorial Stadium.

From the moment that I was accepted into The Cavalier Daily, it was my pride and joy. If no one knew anything else about me, they would know that I wrote and later edited for the student newspaper.

If you search me up on The Cavalier Daily website, you will not find much. After all, it’s not often that you get to hear from a member of the Copy desk — we operate entirely behind-the-scenes. And since you don’t hear from us often, I want to brag about us a little — for every single piece of content that appears on The Cavalier Daily’s website, in print issues and on social media pages, at least one copy staff member has thoroughly read, fact-checked and edited it before publication. We read through every interview transcript, confirm every statistic, double-check every link and point out every stray Oxford comma. In short, an article cannot get published without us.

After arriving at the University in the fall of 2020, I watched The Cavalier Daily from afar, liking Instagram posts, reading news articles and lurking on X, formerly known as Twitter. I had been interested in journalism throughout highschool, but I never had the courage to get involved because of an irrational fear of failure. That all changed when spring rolled around, and I found myself increasingly enamored by the fast paced world of news reporting. Unable to resist my curiosity about journalism anymore, I gathered the courage to attend both info sessions.

Four years ago on move in day, I arrived at the University with a million questions racing through my mind. As my parents finished helping me unpack and left, I sat back and pondered, a mix of excitement and nerves. Could I actually live on my own? Yes! Could I find a community and navigate learning amid COVID-19? Yes! Would the men’s basketball team build on the momentum of the 2019 National Championship and continue to shine in March while I’m here? Um …

It's time to be real. I'm afraid I've been keeping a secret from you for a long time, and the moment to come forward has finally arrived. I’ve always advocated for honesty and transparency, so it’s only fair that I stick to these values for the sake of the students at this University and the readers of The Cavalier Daily. I, Cecy Juárez, am one of the three “squirrels of U.Va.” running the @thesquirrelsofuva page.

I’m going to be honest here — I don’t know where to start. Every writing professor I’ve ever had, every editor I’ve ever worked with, has told me not to start essays this way.

The Honor Committee met Sunday in their last meeting of the semester to review bylaw proposals regarding hearing evidence — including the use of artificial intelligence detectors — and discuss plans to support students during finals. Alexander Church, vice chair for hearings and second-year Engineering student, presented the proposals, which aimed to clarify and adjust the policies regarding evidence used in the Committee’s hearings. The Committee also addressed balancing student perspectives with those of Committee representatives during panel discussions.
