Virginia rolled to a 9-1 victory in their first game against Marist. Junior Nathan Kirby (2-0, 0.73 ERA) started the game on the hill and pitched 5.1 innings of one-run ball while striking out nine. The Cavaliers sprinted out of the blocks and never looked back.
Second-ranked Virginia baseball began its road to Omaha with a three-game road sweep of East Carolina. The Cavaliers (3-0) continued their winning ways as they always do: with dominant pitching and timely hitting.
Vanderbilt junior outfielder John Norwood deposited a Nick Howard fastball into the left field bullpen of TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. One inning later, the Commodores were crowned NCAA champions. The winning home run remains painfully etched in the collective memory of all Virginia baseball fans.
