The Cavaliers placed third out of 15 teams in the women’s event and sixth out of 15 teams in the men’s event.
Out of 18 teams for women, the Cavaliers won first overall.
Out of the 19 teams for women and 15 teams for men, both Cavalier teams placed first overall.
The Cavaliers started the outdoor cross country season off strong, but underperformed against highly competitive teams at the Joe Piane/Notre Dame Invitational.
The cross country teams built on the success from their first meet of the season.
Virginia placed first among six schools competing this weekend.
Similar to the men, the women hope for a strong showing among their ACC foes to catapult them into regionals and the NCAA Championship.
The men’s team placed fourth with 92 points while the women’s team placed seventh with 205 points.
Senior Rohann Asfaw, who has been named USTFCCCA Collegiate National Athlete of the week for two consecutive weeks, won his third race of the season Friday with a time of 23:52.5.
The award follows the men’s cross-country team’s win at the Virginia Invite Friday.
The Cavaliers faced off against Wake Forest and North Carolina during the competition and the meet included an 8K race for the men and a 5K race for the women.
The Cavaliers finished 20th out of 31 teams in the championship, marking the 12th top-20 finish in the program’s history.
Virginia heads to the esteemed Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. to race for the national title.
