Men’s basketball readies for home opener

John Paul Jones Arena was good to the Virginia men’s basketball team a season ago, as coach Tony Bennett’s team joined Oregon, Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana and California as one of only six high-major programs to go unbeaten at home.

Two juniors — forward Isaiah Wilkins and guard Devon Hall — each showed signs of promise last season.

Virginia basketball looks forward to 2016-17 season

Removed at least in time from that gut-wrenching 68-62 loss to Syracuse in last season’s Elite Eight and the departures of his four senior leaders — Malcolm Brogdon, Anthony Gill, Mike Tobey and Evan Nolte — whose collective contribution to the Virginia basketball program goes without saying, Coach Tony Bennett addressed the media Monday afternoon in advance of the 2016-17 season.

Junior guard London Perrantes didn't even attempt a three pointer in the 62-63 loss at Duke. Monday night against NC State, Perrantes drained five of eight shots from beyond the arc, including trifectas on three straight Cavalier possessions in the second half.

Defense limits ACC scoring leader to 14 points, two assists

With less than 48 hours between the final buzzer and Monday’s opening tip, No. 7 Virginia did not have long to process the controversial ending to Saturday’s loss to Duke. The Cavaliers (21-5, 10-4 ACC) took an early body blow from NC State but regrouped and suffocated the life out of the Wolfpack (13-13, 3-10 ACC) in the second half en route to a 73-53 victory inside John Paul Jones Arena.

The Virginia men’s basketball team stung Georgia Tech, 57-28, Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena. The No. 2 Cavaliers (18-0, 6-0 ACC) kept the Yellow Jackets (9-9, 0-6 ACC) to 12 second-half points while holding an opponent to less than 30 overall for the third time this year.

Moving forward

It was Feb. 2013. Senior forward Darion Atkins was sidelined with a shin injury. Junior center Mike Tobey came down with mononucleosis. Junior guard Justin Anderson, the team's 6-foot-6 shooting guard, was forced to play power forward down the stretch in ACC play.

Virginia squares off against slumping Yellow Jackets

The Virginia men’s basketball team looks to continue its torrid start to the season Thursday night against Georgia Tech in Charlottesville. With more than half the regular season complete, the Cavaliers are 17-0, their best start since the 1980-81 team won its first 23 games.

Men's basketball trounces Tigers, 65-42

Virginia junior guard Justin Anderson scored nine of his 11 first-half points from long range Tuesday night against Clemson at John Paul Jones Arena. But when junior guard Malcolm Brogdon found him on the baseline with an open lane to the hoop shortly after the break, the ACC’s leading 3-point shooter soared in for a monster two-handed jam.

Breaking the glass ceiling

It’s been a wild couple of weeks in college basketball to kick off the New Year. Even those Virginia fans that began the season without gray hairs may start examining their manes more closely following a few early ACC games that I think many would agree were too close for comfort.
