Men's soccer survives physical clash against Hokies

Junior midfielder Todd Wharton converted a penalty kick for No. 15 Virginia (10-5-2, 4-3-2 ACC) in the 55th minute, which ultimately proved sufficient to take down Virginia Tech (7-8-2, 2-6-1), 1-0, for the second time this season to advance to the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament on Sunday.

Virginia is preparing for its next conference test, as it will travel to face Clemson (6-6, 3-2 ACC) on Friday night. While the Cavaliers have not defeated the Tigers since 2010 – they suffered 2-0 defeats in both 2012 and 2013 – Virginia plans on finally breaking the streak this year.

On a rain-soaked night in George Mason Stadium, the No. 14 Virginia men’s soccer team (7-3-1, 2-1-1 ACC) dealt the Patriots (7-2-2, 0-1-0 Atlantic 10) their second consecutive loss as the Cavaliers battled to a 1-0 victory.

No. 2 Virginia men's soccer upset by upstart No. 20 Davidson, 2-1

Merely days after moving up to No. 2 and earning a first place vote in the polls, the Virginia men’s soccer team was dealt their second loss of the season Wednesday night.The Wildcats came out strong, but it was the Cavaliers that led at halftime. However, two second half goals within eight minutes of each other were enough for Davidson (4-0-2, 0-0-0 A-10) to pull a 2-1 upset against Virginia (4-2-1, 1-0-0 ACC).

In the first match of ACC play Friday, the No. 15 Virginia men’s soccer team battled to a 1-0 win against a physical Virginia Tech squad, avenging a disappointing 2013 double overtime draw against the Hokies.
