Athletics department explains Dimas decision

Virginia self-reported the rules violations that prompted the NCAA to declare men’s soccer player Ari Dimas ineligible for the remainder of the 2012 season. In a Sept. 19 letter to the NCAA obtained by The Cavalier Daily, Athletic Director Craig Littlepage said Virginia coaches learned of the violation Sept. 10 after coaching staff at an undisclosed school inquired about Dimas’ eligibility.

Virginia shuts out Drexel, 2-0

The rain, which came down in tempestuous waves all day Tuesday, held off long enough during the night for the Virginia men’s soccer team to notch a 2-0 win against Drexel. The Cavaliers (4-2-1, 1-0-0 ACC) seized the lead in the 30th minute off freshman midfielder Todd Wharton’s first career goal and never relinquished it, mustering a strong performance in the absence of senior tri-captain Ari Dimas. Tuesday’s contest against the Dragons (3-2-1) marked the third consecutive game that Virginia played without Dimas, but the first since news broke Monday that Dimas had been ruled ineligible for the remainder of the season by the NCAA.

Virginia cruises to win

The Virginia men’s soccer team won in unusual fashion Tuesday night, as the Cavaliers finally secured a win without one of the down-to-the-wire results that have become the team’s signature. After each of the team’s first four contests were decided by a lone goal — including two that went into overtime — the Cavaliers (3-2-0, 1-0-0 ACC) coasted to a home victory, defeating Mount St.

Bates' late goal downs Duke, 1-0

The Cavaliers (2-2, 1-0 ACC) were in control for the majority of the contest but could not find the breakthrough goal for nearly 60 minutes. In the 58th minute, Virginia finally earned the go-ahead goal after sophomore Eric Bird found classmate Chris Somerville behind the Blue Devil (1-3, 0-1 ACC) defense on the left wing.

Late goal sours solid weekend

The Virginia men’s soccer team’s first homestand should be seen as nothing less than promising, despite ending on a down note. The young squad, which was picked to finish fifth in the ACC, is already on its way to proving prognosticators wrong by splitting two games against ranked opponents in gut-wrenching fashion.
