Survey shows skepticism of American universities

About 60 percent of Americans believe colleges and universities are more concerned with finances than with providing their students a strong education, according to a recent poll released by Public Agenda and the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education. According to the report, these Americans believe that institutions of higher education "operate more like a business, focused more on the bottom line than on the educational experience of students." The poll also revealed that 54 percent of Americans believe colleges could lower costs without having to reduce the quality of their students' education.

Engineering School receives Simio grant

The Engineering School received a $594,000 grant Monday from private software developer Simio LLC. The grant will give University students, faculty members and researchers access to advanced 3-D modeling and simulation software. Simio's technology includes features that have yet to be implemented in the University's current software, such as object-oriented modeling and 3-D graphics, Engineering Prof.

Renowned folklore scholar passes away

Charles L. "Chuck" Perdue, a former Anthropology and English professor and renowned scholar of folklore, passed away Sunday at the age of 79. Perdue was an influential figure in both of his departments during his 36 years of teaching, which lasted from 1971 to 2007, according to a University press release.

University fund weathers losses, begins rebound

The University's endowment declined 22.7 percent during 2008-09, according to the 2009 annual report released by the National Association of College and University Business Officers and the Commonfund Institute. The decline reflects a larger national trend of decreasing endowments for higher education institutions, said John Griswold, executive director of the Commonfund Institute.

Council appoints interim manager

City Council unanimously voted to elect Maurice Jones Acting City Manager at a meeting last night. Jones, who currently serves as Assistant City Manager, will serve as interim manager after current City Manager Gary O'Connell steps down April 12 after 15 years of service. Council members expressed confidence in Maurice's ability to replace O'Connell, who was recently appointed to be the next head of the Albemarle County Service Authority.

Committee presents GIFT fund initiative

Members of Student Council's Environmental Sustainability Committee outlined the provisions of a referendum to establish the Green Initiative Funding Tomorrow fund, which aims to bolster the University's commitment to sustainability, before Council's representative body Feb.
