Opinion

Mind the gap

As a connoisseur of Dining Services, I occasionally make the long and strenuous journey from the Lambeth outback (known for its distant location and variety of native flora and fauna) to O'Hill for dinner.

Opinion

Proud to play

I'm going to apply to be an air traffic controller in the spring, and I know that at some point an interviewer is going to ask me why I think I could be good at handling the stress and making the decisions necessary for the job.

Opinion

Common Sense

When I read the letter to the editor beginning with the claim "The reason many individuals flocked to America in its founding days was to pursue freedom from religious persecution.

Opinion

Three and out

In light of tough economic times, much attention has been given to the rising cost of college tuition and the strain being placed on many universities' financial aid departments.

Opinion

Compromising safety

Given recent events, I'm sure nearly everyone is edgy about safety around Charlottesville these days, which is why an issue I encountered this weekend was particularly surprising to me.

Opinion

Allen Ascent

After spending an evening listening to the engaging ideas of former Governor George Allen, I came away convinced that Allen was not a typical politician.

Opinion

Falling short

President Barack Obama had a cloak of invincibility. Every misstep was excused by the media and most of the nation, from the occasional slip of the tongue - see Henry Louis Gates and Kanye "jackass" West - to larger, unresolved issues such as health care.

Opinion

Laramie remembered

A few weeks ago, members of Queer and Allied Activism (QuAA), presented The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, an epilogue to The Laramie Project, a play written in response to the tragic death of Matthew Shepherd. Eleven years ago, Matthew Shepherd was murdered in Laramie, Wyoming.

Opinion

Two wrongs make a right

There are times when doing the right thing means following the law, or performing a task. But there are other times when doing the right thing means defying the law - because justice is, in some sense, removed from the sphere of what is necessarily "allowable." To understand the first definition of good behavior is to understand that it is right for students to turn in papers on time, and that it is right for University community members to align themselves with sound reason and social convention.

Opinion

Singing satire

Ginny Robinson apparently didn't get the memo. That's understandable, since Robinson wasn't born when mathematician and musician Tom Lehrer declared satire dead.

Opinion

Parenting 101

WHAT DO you think when you hear the names Gosselin, Suleman, and Heene? Do any of these parents really think about the well being of their children?

Opinion

Readjusting strategy

After witnessing the 34-9 loss to the eleventh-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday, I realized that Virginia football must change specific aspects of their game in order to become successful in an increasingly more challenging ACC.

Opinion

Unsafe consequences

In her column entitled Safe Sex, Claire Shotwell extols the virtue of an upcoming event, the "Sexual Arts and Crafts Fair." At this event, UVA's chapter of "Voices for Planned Parenthood" (Vox) will give information to students about "safe sex" and set up competitions in which students race to properly place condoms on vegetables.

Opinion

Poor depiction

I am writing in reaction to Mr. Lynch's editorial cartoon on Oct.

Opinion

SIS Frustrations

When reading your article regarding the ineffectiveness of the Student Information System ("University releases list of spring 2010 courses", Oct.

Opinion

Set adrift

Yesterday evening was a busy one for the Honor Committee. In addition to its usual business and weekly reports from several school representatives, the Committee heard two community concerns and discussed two important proposed amendments regarding the Semester at Sea program.

Opinion

Marijuana modification

The Justice Department's decision to stop prosecuting marijuana dispensaries and patients in states where medical marijuana is legal should be applauded by liberals and conservatives alike.

Opinion

Education? In-Deed

Virginia's gubernatorial elections are just around the corner. Unfortunately, they may not be as exciting as last year's presidential election.

Opinion

In absentia

This semester, the University Unity Project is under new management. Formerly a Student Council program, the project is now run by an independent committee consisting of about 30 CIO representatives.
