Effective leadership

In the midst of the transition from the Matt Schrimper administration to the John Nelson administration, it is important to keep in mind that student self-governance goes far beyond Student Council.

Opinion

I

I KNOW what you?re thinking: ?Oh no, not another honor column complaining about some little facet of our community of trust.? Even though it may seem The Cavalier Daily has a weekly quota to meet of columns pertaining to honor, this is not one of them.

Opinion

Reckless spending

President Obama?s 2010 federal budget, released recently to Congress and the public, marks some important changes from former President George W.

Opinion

Star power

While many are rightly upset over the choice of Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson for commencement speaker due to his controversial comments and arguments about American detention policies following September 11, 2001, and racial diversity, the saddest thing is that prior to the announcement of Wilkinson as the commencement speaker, I had never heard of him.

Opinion

Speaking of freedoms

In a reprise of events from last fall, the University community again received a visit from a very vocal traveling evangelist last week.

Opinion

Free labor

For my fellow fourth years reading this column, I think we can all agree on one thing: Finding a job right now sucks. The economy is failing, companies are laying-off employees left and right, and almost every industry has some sort of a hiring freeze.

Opinion

Rate my university

As of last Saturday, it is officially Spring. It is the season for Foxfield, narbecues, and outdoor sports, as well as spring advising, which is currently underway for the fall semester.

Opinion

Battle of the metropolis

Wal-Mart. The name alone can spark debate, elicit groans and streams of vitriol, and can set off an internal battle in shoppers? minds between wanting to save money and wanting to fight off the big-box version of ?the man? at the same time.So it was inevitable that a store so notorious would cause so much controversy when it threatened to encroach upon a beloved historic battlefield.

Opinion

Placing the blame

The pictures have been splashed across the front pages of gossip magazines across the country: shock photos of Rihanna with swollen lips and black eyes, pictures of Chris Brown with his head bowed and eyes averted, bold black headlines declaring the state of their relationship, each one contradicting the next: ?They?re Over!?, ?She?s Taking Him Back!? The media frenzy following the fight in which Brown beat up his girlfriend Rihanna has essentially stripped both singers of their dignity, exposing their relationship for criticism and commentary from the informed and absolutely clueless alike.

Opinion

Tear down this wall

President Obama, please tear down this wall. In the midst of your meteoric rise to become Harvard Law Review?s first black president in 1990, the Berlin Wall, which symbolized the Cold War, was reduced to rubble.

Opinion

Opening up economics

As I opened my inbox last week to read about the economics department?s new requirements, I hoped against hope the department had taken the step toward relevance I have long felt it needed.

Opinion

Tracking the transition

Today the wishes of students become reality. In a ceremony at 6 p.m., John Nelson will officially take up the mantle of Student Council president, accompanied by newly elected Vice President for Organizations Colin Hood and Vice President for Administration Nikhil Panda.

Opinion

Minor problems

If the Commerce School is the number one undergraduate business school in the nation, as we are frequently reminded these days, why can?t they handle a providing an academic minor for College students? The answer, as it turns out, is much more nuanced than a cursory evaluation might provide.

Opinion

Hope for health care

On Tuesday, the Virginia Organizing Project (VOP) showed the PBS film Critical Condition, a documentary that follows the lives of a handful of people as they struggle without health insurance.

Opinion

Making the grade

Anytime a student submits work for evaluation, that student relies on the objectivity of the grader to receive a fair grade.

Opinion

Defending grade inflation

In Monday's Cavalier Daily a story highlighted recent research by a retired Duke professor Stuart Rojstaczer on the widespread grade inflation on college campuses around the country (?Research cites grade inflation as cause for national increase in GPA,? 3/16/2009). Recently, the Department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese here at the University shifted its grading policy to remove the A+ from its grading scale and making it more difficult to get an A in its language courses.
