Cavaliers face stiff competition at Palm Springs Tournament

The Virginia softball team opened play in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Ca. Thursday night by splitting games against No. 22 Washington and San Diego State. Up next for the Cavaliers is a Friday night game against No. 9 Oregon followed by Saturday matchups against Colorado State and No. 20 Stanford.

Mixed weekend ends on high note

The Virginia softball team competed in the Purple and Gold Challenge this weekend in Baton Rouge, La., winning its first and last games but dropping three in between. The Cavaliers (4-4, 0-0 ACC) opened Friday afternoon against the Memphis Tigers (2-8, 0-0 C-USA). Senior Melanie Mitchell threw a complete game shutout, leading the team to a 2-0 win.

The Virginia softball team found itself on both the winning and losing side of two lopsided games during Wednesday's doubleheader against Radford. The Cavaliers (20-18, 5-7 ACC) seemed to do everything right in the first game, coming away with a 7-1 victory, but both the defense and offense fell apart in game two as Virginia was put away in five innings.

Thirteen games into the season, the Virginia softball team is off to its best start since 1993. In its first home stand of the season this weekend, Virginia (11-2, 0-0 ACC) won all five of its games at the round-robin style Cavalier Invitational.

Four teams square off in Cavalier Classic

The Virginia softball team plays a rare series of home matches this weekend when it hosts the Cavalier Invitational, a tournament featuring Ohio, Colgate and Saint Joseph's. With an opening schedule consisting primarily of play on the road, the tournament marks the first and last time the Cavaliers (6-2, 0-0 ACC) will play in Charlottesville until March 24. The Cavaliers performed impressively in their first two tournaments, allowing fewer than two runs per game and scoring more than five on average. "It was a great way to open the season up," junior catcher Kristen Hawkins said after the East Carolina Pirate Classic, the squad's first tournament held in Greenville, NC. Virginia's pair of losses came last Friday at the East Carolina Pirate Clash - the squad's second tournament, also held in Greenville, NC - against two teams with high-caliber pitching.
