​Virginia suffers two straight losses to end regular season

The Virginia volleyball team had a rough weekend as it went 0-2 and suffered a deep blow to its NCAA tournament chances. The Cavaliers were looking to close out the regular season with two wins in order to better their chances of reaching the NCAA tournament for the first time in 16 years.

Missed chances haunt Cavaliers, cut postseason short

No. 1 Virginia women’s soccer fell to then-No. 4 Florida State 0-0 at the ACC Final Nov. 8, after redshirt forward Berglind Thorvaldsdottir netted her side’s seventh penalty kick. The Cavaliers had outshot the Seminoles 17 to 11 prior to the shootout but failed to take advantage.

Virginia squanders Commonwealth Cup

Virginia Tech rode a 17-7 fourth quarter surge to claim the 12th consecutive win in the state of Virginia’s marquee football rivalry. With the win, the Hokies (6-6, 4-4 ACC) send head coach Frank Beamer to one final bowl game. The Cavaliers (4-8, 3-5 ACC) end their fourth consecutive season with nothing to show.

​A forgettable end

Let’s face it, a Virginia win Saturday wouldn’t have been right. Not for Virginia, whose fans would have stormed the field only to call for coach Mike London’s head moments later. And not for that divine coach from Blacksburg — how dare Virginia deny him a win in his final regular season game?


Senior Joseph Martinez defeated Drexel’s junior Tanner Shoap in the championship round with a major decision in order to claim the title in the 125 pound weight class.

Virginia wrestlers find success at Mat Town Open

The No. 20 Virginia wrestling team took a step away from team competition as it traveled to Lock Haven, Pa. for the Mat Town Open Sunday, Nov. 22. The open was the first individual competition that the Cavaliers (4-2) had seen since the Clarion Open earlier this month.

Women’s soccer goes 2-0, advances to Elite 8

Virginia snatched an early 1-0 lead that afternoon, as a low strike from star senior forward Makenzy Doniak found the left corner a little after one minute into the game. Friday night, it took the Cavaliers more than 50 minutes to break through.
