Virginia defeats George Washington, 59-42

With fans at John Paul Jones Arena screaming for the team to step on the gas in the second half, Bennett implored his team to slow down. Virginia responded with its most impressive 20 minute stretch of the season, using a more deliberate offensive approach to outscore George Washington by 21 points in the second half of its 59-42 victory.

Johnstone, LeBlanc Named to Senior All-Star Game

Just when senior midfielder Kelsey LeBlanc and senior goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone thought that their collegiate careers had come to an end, they learned that together, they had earned one more honor: being selected to play in the Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division I Senior All-Star game.

Women's soccer hosts Rutgers in Friday NCAA clash

Following its convincing 8-0 victory last Friday, the second-seeded Virginia women’s soccer team will enjoy a week of rest before its next matchup — an invaluable asset for a Cavalier squad which has played a 20-game season and is heading into a potential Friday-Sunday, second and third round NCAA tournament schedule this weekend.

Cavaliers host Hurricanes to close home schedule

Nearly two weeks later, the Cavaliers (4-6, 2-4 ACC) prepare to host Miami (6-4, 3-3 ACC) in a must-win game this Saturday. With four losses by less than eight points, Virginia has made its days ahead more difficult. But bowl eligibility is still achievable if the team can win this week and next week vs. Virginia Tech.


Junior guard Malcolm Brogdon knocked down two 3-pointers, grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists in 26 minutes Sunday night against Norfolk State.

Volleyball falls flat against Virginia Tech

In the latest edition of the Commonwealth Clash, the Virginia volleyball team fell against rival Virginia Tech Friday night, 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20). The Cavaliers jumped out to a 1-0 lead but proceeded to drop the next three sets, splitting the season series with the Hokies after a comeback 3-2 win Oct. 12 in Blacksburg.


Junior Courtney Bartholomew competed on another level Saturday at the Aquatic and Fitness Center, tying the pool record in the 100-yard backstroke and breaking the pool record in the 200-yard backstroke. Bartholomew also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly.

Swimming and diving impresses against NC State

The No. 7 Virginia women (2-1, 1-0 ACC) claimed 11 of 16 events in an impressive 188-102 win against No. 22 North Carolina State (2-2, 2-1 ACC). Meanwhile, the Cavalier men (1-3, 0-1 ACC) dropped a hard-fought meet against the No. 6 Wolfpack.

Men's basketball hosts South Carolina State

The No. 9 Cavaliers will host South Caroline State Tuesday night at John Paul Jones Arena. Virginia (2-0) dispatched Norfolk State and James Madison during the weekend, and will attempt to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2010-11.

No. 4 Women's soccer advances to NCAA second round

Friday night — in what seemed like the blink of an eye — the fourth-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team erased any doubt that its national championship hopes were in jeopardy, as the team made a strong statement that it is ready to make a deep run in this year’s NCAA tournament. Playing in near-freezing temperatures, the Cavaliers (19-2) got hot early, tallying three goals in the first 12 minutes and two more in the span of 40 seconds in the 27th minute.

Quality debuts

His senior year at Greater Atlanta Christian High School, Virginia freshman forward Isaiah Wilkins averaged a cool 18.2 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.4 blocks, 2.6 assists and 2.2 steals per game. The stepson of NBA Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, the Cavaliers’ Wilkins once blocked eight shots in a single high school game.
