Virginia tops No. 6 Maryland, 86-72

With 30 seconds left in the second half Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena, Virginia senior guard Kelsey Wolfe held the ball near midcourt, her team up by 12 points and the pro-Cavalier crowd on its feet.

The No. 1 Virginia men’s tennis team begins the defense of its 2013 ITA Indoors and NCAA Championships this weekend as it hosts the first four matches of the season, all at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

Freshman Perrantes thrives at point

One of the biggest questions lingering throughout the offseason was who would fill the void at point guard left by Jontel “Bub” Evans. Evans was a fixture in the Cavaliers’ backcourt dating back to the 2009-2010 season, playing in 120 of his team’s 129 games during his four years at Virginia and starting 92.

Virginia releases 2014 football schedule

In approximately ten months, eager consumers around the nation will swarm retail stores on “Black Friday” to gobble up favorable discounts. The Virginia football team, on the other hand, will be shopping for something unavailable on the shelves of Wal-Mart: a Commonwealth Cup. For the first time since 1996, the Cavaliers will play Virginia Tech the day after Thanksgiving next season.

The Virginia swimming and diving teams continue their season on the road this weekend against ACC opponents Duke and North Carolina. The Cavaliers were impressive last weekend in Christiansburg, Va., capturing five of the six dual-meets.

Harris thrives with lessened load

Last year senior guard Joe Harris had a breakout season, establishing himself as the Virginia men basketball team’s best scoring option and one of the top scorers in the ACC. That status came with burden of carrying the Cavaliers’ offense — through 19 games last year, Harris had 12 games in which he attempted more than 10 shots.

Smith wins ACC Swimmer of the Week

Adding to her already record-setting first-year, freshman Leah Smith was honored Tuesday by members of the Atlantic Coast Conference as the Female Swimmer of the Week for her performance against Virginia Tech, Wisconsin and Miami last weekend in Christiansburg, V.A.

No. 12 matmen sweep weekend foes

The No. 12 Virginia wrestling team picked up two more wins over the weekend. The Cavaliers (13-2, 2-0 ACC) brushed aside Duke 30-6 Friday before outlasting Old Dominion 20-12 in a grueling, hard fought match.
