No. 6 Seminoles await Virginia for three-game series

Despite a No. 14 ranking, the Virginia baseball team has sometimes performed erratically. From the Cavaliers' young roster has emerged inconsistency; blowout losses to teams barely mustering a .500 record have been mixed with big wins against nationally ranked conference opponents.

Mikalauskas to have shoulder surgery today

Junior Lars Mikalauskas will undergo surgery on his left shoulder today and will not return to full-contact basketball for five months, according to an athletic department statement. After playing the first nine games in the 2007-08 season, Mikalauskas missed the next 13 games because of a shoulder injury.

"The next couple of days we need to rough our kids up and get them ready for Boston College," Virginia coach Julie Myers said, expressing what seems to be the consensus of the entire women's lacrosse team for this weekend's game.

Swimmers succeed at NCAAs

If after sweeping the 2008 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships the Cavaliers did not think their season could get any better, both the men's and women's teams were wrong. Closing out the 2007-08 season with 15th-place and 20th-place finishes, respectively, at the NCAA Championships, the Cavalier men and women proved they are competitive not just regionally, but also on the national stage. "I am really thrilled for both teams and for the athletes that participated in the meets," Virginia coach Mark Bernardino said.

Playing a sub-.500 team in Towson for a two-game, midweek series this week and coming off a convincing three-game sweep of rival Virginia Tech over the weekend, two easy victories seemed to be in order for the Virginia baseball team.

Zoll, Wright gain recognition

Two Virginia women's basketball players were recently recognized for their achievements on the hardwood this season: Senior guard Sharneé Zoll was invited to participate in the WNBA pre-draft camp Friday and Saturday at the University of Tampa, and sophomore guard Monica Wright was selected as an honorable mention to the AP All-America team. Zoll's achievements this year include breaking the all-time ACC career assists record set by Virginia alumna Dawn Staley while leading the Cavaliers to their first NCAA Tournament victory since 2005 against UC Santa Barbara.

Softball looks to turn season around against Lancers

After losing eight of nine games in the Red and Black Tournament and Cavalier Classic, the Virginia softball team has an opportunity to win three games in a row for the second time this season with a doubleheader Wednesday against Longwood University. The Cavaliers (9-23, 4-5 ACC) have struggled to find a regular level of performance.

Women's lacrosse downs Blue Devils

The Virginia women's lacrosse team prevailed 13-9 in Durham to beat Duke Saturday, becoming the first team to defeat the Blue Devils at home in 19 games. Virginia got out to a strong start against the Blue Devils with an 8-2 halftime advantage.

Maryland ends Cavs' win streak

The Maryland men's lacrosse team tarnished the top-ranked Cavaliers' perfect record Saturday, handing them a 13-7 defeat at Byrd Stadium. The Terrapins (7-2, 2-1 ACC) scored first and maintained the lead for the full 60 minutes.
