Cavs drop series to Tar Heels

For a softball team whose season-long goal has been to make the regional tournament, the Cavaliers certainly are making things difficult for themselves. Virginia (25-20, 0-2 ACC) dropped two games yesterday to ACC rival North Carolina (32-14, 2-0) in the team's first two conference games of the season.

Cavaliers finish strong to seal victory

DURHAM, N.C. -- Virginia coach Brian O'Connor said the games in April will tell what kind of a baseball team Virginia has. The squad began April in strong fashion this weekend with a three-game sweep of Duke (14-16, 3-6 ACC) in Durham. Virginia improved to 25-7 on the season and 8-4 in the conference while defeating the Blue Devils, 3-1, in the series finale and 8-1, 6-5 in the first two contests.

Virginia takes on No. 1 again

A national No. 1 ranking in any sport can be both a blessing and a hindrance. Teams will rarely acknowledge this fact, preferring instead to deny any recognition of rankings.

Gillen returns for another season

New ticketing system just what Virginia needs

As a three-year member of the 'Hoo Crew and as a rabid basketball fan who hasn't missed a non-winter break home game since first year, I would like to endorse the Athletic Department's proposed online basketball ticketing system. I'll admit that I was skeptical at first, believing that any system that required the Virginia student body to plan to attend a basketball game was inherently flawed considering the large fluctuations in student attendance over the past few years.

Littlepage discusses future with Gillen

Virginia head basketball coach Pete Gillen was scheduled to meet with Athletic Director Craig Littlepage yesterday morning to review the state of the men's basketball program, the Charlottesville Daily Progress reported. Top Virginia officials have aroused recent suspicion surrounding Gillen's coaching status by not commenting on whether or not the coach will be retained for the remainder of his contract.

Cavaliers concentrate on establishing consistency

The Virginia softball team takes to the field this afternoon at The Park for a doubleheader against Brown (6-9). The Cavaliers (23-18) will be looking to bounce back after falling short of the Hoo's Who Tournament crown Sunday. After defeating Penn State, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon to advance to the championship game later that evening, Virginia couldn't pull through in the title match as they lost, 3-2, to N.C.

Virginia tames Bears with huge rally

Based on the first half inning of last night's game against Brown, it looked like Virginia would be in for a long night. Brown's lead-off hitter, right fielder Paul Christian, hit a home run in the first at bat of the contest.

Team Tommy John

After watching Virginia effectively ice their rainout win over Brown last night by scoring nine two-out runs in the first inning, the intensity of the game was completely sapped.
