World Cup soccer squad sets to work at Klöckner

The number of pre-pubescent screaming girls lined up around Klöckner Stadium last Saturday morning was so large that the only logical explanation for the scene seemed to be that Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake was preparing to perform a concert at the soccer stadium. But the name the multitude of young females screamed out in adoration was not "Justin" or "Britney." It was "Mia." Legendary soccer player and national superstar Mia Hamm along with the rest of the U.S.

Christian paces Cavaliers at Lou Onesty Invitational

The Virginia cross country team hosted the Lou Onesty Invitational Saturday in Charlottesville. Will Christian took top honors for the men, winning the individual title for the Virginia men's cross country squad. Overall, the women's team produced six runners in the top 19 while the men finished their best six runners in the top 21. Christian won the title with a time of 24:28.90.

Virginia Volleyball Continues Winning Ways

The Virginia volleyball team (11-0) extended its perfect record Saturday with a 3-1 (25-30, 30-17, 30-23, 30-27) victory over Kentucky to win the Kentucky Conference Challenge at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington. This marks the third consecutive tournament the Cavaliers have won in 2003, and moves their record to 11-0, the best start in program history. Senior libero Whitney Ashcraft was named MVP of the tournament, recording a match-high 23 defensive saves against Kentucky and setting the school record with 42 digs against Syracuse in the second game of the tournament. Senior outside hitter Paige Davis and junior middle Alexis Geocaris were named to the all-tournament team.

High Shots, Defense Propel Virginia Field Hockey Past VCU

The Virginia field hockey team (4-1) defeated Virginia Commonwealth, 2-1, Friday night in Richmond thanks to high shots and a strong defensive effort. Both Cavalier goals laced the upper netting of the cage, as Katie Nicholson chipped a ball from just inside the circle for Virginia's first goal and Allie Flynn tipped in a Juli Bojanic free hit to break a 1-1 tie late in the game.

Struggling Virginia battles No. 2 Wake Forest

The Virginia men's soccer team returns to Klöckner Stadium tomorrow against Wake Forest for their first home game in two weeks. The Cavaliers' game against Wake will open the in-conference season for both teams and kickoff a two-week home stint. Virginia (1-3) has yet to win at home this season, going 0-2 in Charlottesville, including a loss to Seton Hall and an overtime defeat to Saint Louis. The Cavaliers' lone win on the season came last Friday against American University during the Maryland Soccer Classic.

ACC Discusses Expansion Plans

The nine current athletic directors in the ACC met in Greensboro, N.C. to discuss schedule plans in basketball and football for the 11-team conference when it expands in 2004.

The men's golf team recently finished in fifth place at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate Invitational with several strong showings by young Virginia athletes.

Jennings key for Western Michigan

Virginia is coming off an appalling 31-7 loss to South Carolina last weekend, but the Western Michigan football team still faces a rigorous test this Saturday when the Cavaliers visit Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich. This will be the first meeting between Virginia (1-1, 1-0 ACC) and WMU (1-1) squads and it is the Broncos' Centennial Game.
