Virginia midfielder Nick Russo was named ACC men's lacrosse Player of the Week yesterday for his efforts in the Cavaliers' victory over Duke Saturday, the team's seventh victory in a row. Russo, a senior from Port Jefferson, N.Y., tallied two goals and an assist against the Blue Devils in the Cavaliers' 15-10 victory that clinched the ACC regular season championship.

Cav alum, coach makes strong showing in Seoul

In 1997, Dana Coons walked on to the Virginia cross country team. Five years later, while serving as an assistant coach for distance and cross country runners, Coons, a 2001 University graduate, was selected to represent the United States in the April 7 Seoul Women's Ekiden race in Seoul, South Korea. Coons ran the third fastest six kilometer leg of the Seoul Ekiden, helping the United States finish seventh while the Russian and Japanese teams took first and second place, respectively. "My trip to Seoul was a wonderful and memorable experience," Coons said.

The Virginia women's club gymnastics team ended its season with an 11th place finish in the NAIGC National Championships, where 27 women's teams and 260 women competed at Ohio State last weekend.

Dominant Cavaliers look to trounce GMU

The No. 3 Virginia and No. 19 George Mason women's lacrosse teams may play in the same state, but they are coming from completely different directions heading into today's matchup. The Cavaliers (11-2, 3-0 ACC) have won six straight games, including four wins in a row over opponents ranked in the top 20.

The Virginia women's rowing team won four events Saturday at the George Washington Invitational Crew Classic held in Washington, D.C. The Cavaliers finished first in the varsity eight, the second varsity eight, the varsity four and the second novice eight. Virginia took the varsity eight competition for the seventh year in a row with a time of six minutes, 35.1 seconds, followed by Columbia (6:37.3). The Cavaliers' second varsity eight won its race in 6:39.4, followed by Columbia (6:53.5). The Cavaliers finished first with a two-under 862.

Heels take pair from Cavs

On a day that saw the softball team lose two one-run games to North Carolina at home, frustration was the team's overriding emotion. After blanking the Cavaliers (38-17, 0-4 ACC) 1-0 in the first game of yesterday's doubleheader, North Carolina (29-21, 2-2) led 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh.

The Virginia men's tennis team fell to No. 30 Virginia Tech yesterday, 5-2 to drop to 11-10 overall on the season. Senior Jonathan Chou and sophomore Gregg Alpert were the only players to pick up wins for the Cavaliers.

Virginia rides hot streak into weekend

Last weekend, the Virginia softball team (37-14) emerged victorious at the highly competitive Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., completing the tournament with a 4-0 record against ACC rivals Maryland, UNC and Georgia Tech.

Welch recovers, rediscovers joy of throwing on field

John Welch was named ACC track and field performer of the week this week, and although this might not seem surprising for a senior athlete who finished first in the ACC in the javelin throw his freshman year, it is unexpected from an athlete who twice prepared himself never to compete again. Welch said he only once thought of quitting, after his first college throwing coach left. "I was really considering trying out for the baseball team, just as a walk on," Welch said.

Freshman Reynolds shows potential, excels beyond plate

Freshman shortstop Mark Reynolds has developed a habit of showing up earlier than expected. Last June, Reynolds arrived in Charlottesville to play baseball - leading Virginia Beach's First Colonial High School team in a state quarterfinal matchup against Albemarle High School. This spring, Reynolds first won the starting shortstop job and has blossomed into one of the team's top hitters, making an impact much earlier than expected. Reynolds said that Virginia coach Dennis Womack "told me I'd have the opportunity to compete for a starting job.
