Cavs start season off strong against Rebels

Virginia women's soccer senior co-captain Lori Lindsey wasted little time making a case for her second ACC player of the year award Saturday in the Cavaliers' 3-0 win over Mississippi. Lindsey, a center midfielder, scored the first goal of the Cavaliers' first 2001 home game 18 minutes into the first half.

Cavaliers barely escape Spiders' rally in home opener

Virginia football coach Al Groh promised that his Cavaliers would be exciting to watch. He kept his word on Saturday. After a 36-yard David Greene field goal put Virginia comfortably ahead, 17-0, with 20 minutes left to play, the Cavaliers almost fumbled their way to a loss and narrowly escaped Scott Stadium with a 17-16 win over Richmond. "We're pleased to have won," Groh said.

Womack to undergo surgery on ankle

Virginia football coach Al Groh announced yesterday that senior tailback Antwoine Womack will have surgery on his ankle. Womack went down with a high ankle sprain during Saturday's season-opening game at Wisconsin. Womack will undergo surgery as soon as the swelling in his ankle goes down, Groh announced.
