Author, visual artist and DJ Kid Koala comes to Charlottesville

"Have you heard? Kid Koala is coming to the Satellite Ballroom!" "Kid Koala? Is he coming with Captain Kangaroo?" "Um, no." "Well who is he?" "He's, like, a DJ." A DJ, turntablist and visual artist, Kid Koala is one of the most exciting names in hip-hop (and various other musical endeavors). Born Eric San in Vancouver, he is now based in Quebec and signed to Ninja Tune Records. One of Koala's most recognized qualities is his exhausting productivity.

"We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank" appeals to all passengers on the boat

The cover art of Modest Mouse's fifth album is telling: a hot air balloon carrying an anchor. In forging their fifth full-length, Isaac Brock and company must have felt multiple weights hindering their musical ascent. Pulling them from all sides were their low-fi fans, craving a return to basement recordings, desolate lyrics and trademark jam sessions to close out tracks; radio listeners, expecting another "Float On" to lift their spirits from early spring doldrums; and Epic Records likely hoping for another well-received and popular album to follow up the band's 2004 breakthrough, Good News for People Who Love Bad News. None of these disparate factions will be completely thrilled with We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, the third major-label release of the Washington-born indie rock outfit.

Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Boy thinks girl is dead and kills himself. Girl awakes, discovers boy and kills herself. Though it perhaps does not have the happiest ending, William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet has met ongoing success and continues to be, arguably, his most well-known play. It is has survived many adaptations, including the recent Oscar-winning short film West Bank Story.
