McDonnell plans disaster relief in Sandy's wake

Gov. Bob McDonnell held his final scheduled press briefing Tuesday in Richmond to discuss the impact of Hurricane Sandy in Virginia and the state’s recovery efforts. Hurricane Sandy took a heavy toll on much of the Atlantic seaboard, particularly in states such as New Jersey and New York, but Virginia was spared the brunt of the storm.

Senior linebacker persists amid struggles

This is not the way the story was supposed to end. After three years of dutiful and occasionally spectacular service, senior linebacker and defensive captain Steve Greer was supposed to cap his college career with a 2012 season replete with excitement, accolades and, most crucially, wins.

Senior captain sets example for young squad

Although it lasted only a matter of seconds, the silence was deafening. The suspension of sound and movement lingered on the practice field until an emphatic declaration abruptly reestablished reality. “Keep playing!” the voice bellowed. The action on the pitch resumed, but it wasn’t until senior tri-captain Will Bates signaled “thumbs up” from the sideline where he clutched his bloodied nose that the palpable uneasiness dissipated. Moments earlier, Bates had been inadvertently struck square in the face when an errant rocket shot fired toward goal.

Coach Mike London announced Monday that he has suspended sophomore weakside linebacker Henry Coley, junior tight end Jeremiah Mathis and senior fullback LoVante’ Battle indefinitely for violating team rules.

Cavaliers fare well in ACC Championships

The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams had a strong showing at the ACC Championships Saturday at Smithfield Plantation in Blacksburg, Va. Competing against three teams ranked in the top 30, the men’s team finished second overall, a mere six points behind champion Virginia Tech.

Kirk resigns from University Board of Visitors

Entrepreneur Randal J. Kirk has offered his resignation from the University Board of Visitors, citing his recent move to Florida as the reason for his departure. “I am honored to have served as a member of the Board since 2009,” Kirk said in the letter.

Men's soccer ties Boston College, guarantees winning record

The Virginia men’s soccer team earned a crucial point in the standings Friday, playing No. 22 Boston College to a scoreless draw in Newton, Massachusetts. The tie guarantees the Cavaliers (8-6-2, 2-4-1 ACC) a .500 or better record for the 32nd consecutive season and in doing so fulfills a major benchmark for the NCAA Tournament selection process. Both teams had dangerous scoring opportunities in the first period.
