South Sudan diplomat addresses students

The African Studies Initiative hosted United States Ambassador Designate Larry André Tuesday evening for a lecture about recent conflict in South Sudan. André’s talk focused on the history of South Sudan — which became an independent nation in 2011 and has recently faced a series of ethnic conflicts.

Virginia prepares for Miami

The No. 12 Virginia Cavaliers will look to extend their winning streak to 12 games when they take on the Miami Hurricanes Wednesday night in Charlottesville. A win against Miami would mark coach Tony Bennett’s 100th career win with Virginia.


	Junior first baseman Mike Papi hit his ninth and tenth home runs of the year as Virginia lost an ACC series for the first time all season. His longball total leads the conference.

Baseball goes quiet against VMI

The Cavaliers (6-2), who lost for the first time since their season-opener against Kentucky, proved largely unable to solve sophomore long reliever Taylor Edens, who followed senior lefthander Campbell Henkel with five, two-hit innings out of the bullpen.


	Senior attackman Mark Cockerton scored seven goals Tuesday at Mount St. Mary’s.

Virginia downs Mount St. Mary's

The No. 4 Virginia men’s lacrosse team continued its winning ways Tuesday, routing Mount St. Mary’s 14-6. After starting the season with three straight one-goal victories, the Cavaliers’ high-octane offense has come to life in their last two games, posting a combined 15-goal margin of the victory in those contests.


	Redshirt junior Nick Sulzer is 30-1 in 2013-14.

Wrestling tangles with adversity, enjoys banner year

This was banner season for 12th-ranked Virginia wrestling. The Cavaliers (18-3, 5-1 ACC) recorded the second-most wins in program history, made then-No. 8 Virginia Tech their highest-ranked victim ever while snapping an eight-match losing streak to the Hokies, and captured their first Virginia Duals banner.


	The Board of Visitors (above) met last Thursday and Friday to approve graduate tuition rates, among other things.

Board of Visitors increases graduate tuition

The Board of Visitors voted last week to increase the tuition rates for many graduate programs offered by the University, both in the College and other schools. The increases in tuition and fees range between 1.2 and 19.6 percent, with rates varying for in-state and out-of-state students.


Since 1991 the Women’s Center has given the Distinguished Alumna award to women contributing to a number of diverse fields.

Monday marked the start of the University’s Every Body Week, a campaign organized by the Women’s Resource Center in association with the University’s Coalition on Eating Disorders and Exercise Concerns.

Western Bypass faces roadblocks

The proposal to construct a western U.S. Route 29 bypass ran into a pair of roadblocks last week, as the Federal Highways Administration requested the Virginia Department of Transportation further review the project and the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution asking Gov. Terry McAuliffe to direct funds away from the project.


	As University students attempted to cast their ballots for candidates (see posters above) Monday morning, ITS servers experienced “unplanned downtime” that temporarily prevented some from voting.

UBE faces voting system problems

At approximately 10:50 a.m. Monday, the University Board of Elections voting website, www.uvavote.com, experienced “unplanned downtime” that was likely a crash due to heavy traffic. According to the Board, the occurrence prevented some students from voting during a two-hour window Monday morning, but did not alter votes which were already cast.

Elections for University Judiciary Committee members begin today. Students can log online to www.uvavote.com from now through Thursday to cast their ballots.
