Welcoming seven new players as well as another back from injury, the Virginia volleyball team opened their season this weekend, hosting the Jefferson Cup at Memorial Gym. The women defeated Marshall in their first match 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 29-27) Friday, and continued their success Saturday with a 3-1 win against James Madison (25-23, 23-25, 25-15, 26-24) and a 3-0 win against Montana (25-16, 25-22, 25-23). From the outset, the Cavaliers received great production from the newcomers.
The Virginia volleyball team’s first season under coach Dennis Hohenshelt last year was not an easy one. With effectively only 12 players available for much of the season — severely limiting depth at most positions — the team stumbled to a 9-22 record, and a dismal 3-17 in the ACC. However, the return of an injured veteran and the arrival of seven new players should allow the team to erase the bad memories of 2012 and become serious contenders in the conference.
The Virginia volleyball team brought a tumultuous season to a disappointing end Friday, suffering a sweep to Virginia Tech.
The Virginia volleyball team fell this weekend at NC State and No. 24 North Carolina, stalling its momentum before its season-ending match against archrival Virginia Tech Friday.
The Virginia volleyball team knows the postseason is beyond reach but has adopted a different goal for its final three matches: make others miss out as well.
After suffering a tightly contested loss to Maryland Friday, the Virginia volleyball team rebounded the next day to defeat Boston College on Senior Night. Virginia (9-19, 3-14 ACC) knocked off a formidable Georgia Tech team last weekend, and the newly confident Cavaliers expected Maryland and Boston College to be tough but winnable matches.
The Virginia volleyball team plays its final home matches of the season this weekend when it hosts Maryland and Boston College.
The Virginia volleyball team split two ACC matches this weekend, topping Georgia Tech 3-2 before falling to Clemson 3-1. The mixed weekend served as a measuring stick for the Cavaliers’ (8-18, 2-13 ACC) positive progress this year.
The Virginia volleyball team plays conference opponents Georgia Tech and Clemson this weekend in the first half of a four-match home slate. Last weekend, Virginia (7-17, 1-12 ACC) fell in straight sets at No.
The Virginia volleyball team dropped conference matches at No. 11 Florida State and No. 23 Miami during the weekend. The Cavaliers (7-17, 1-12 ACC) faced the ACC-leading Seminoles (21-2, 12-1 ACC) Friday evening.
The Virginia volleyball team nabbed its first ACC win Saturday against Wake Forest, but it faces a more daunting challenge this weekend.
The Virginia volleyball team has finally found its first ACC win this season. After falling to Duke Friday, the Cavaliers bounced back the following evening to defeat Wake Forest and notch their first conference victory of the season. “I’m happy for the girls,” coach Dennis Hohenshelt said.
After snapping an eight-game skid Tuesday, the Virginia volleyball team has a new goal as it hosts Duke and Wake Forest this weekend — notch a conference win.
Dennis Hohenshelt had been a Pennsylvania man his whole life. It was where he went to school and played volleyball.
After dropping two tough matches this weekend against North Carolina and N.C. State, the Virginia volleyball team still seeks its first conference victory. Entering the weekend, the Cavaliers (5-14, 0-9 ACC) hoped to snap a six-match losing streak by defeating the Tar Heels (15-4, 6-3 ACC). Virginia’s 25-18 loss in the first set seemed to dash any thoughts of halting the skid, but the team rebounded to win the second set 25-21 — the first time Virginia has broken 20 points in a second set since beating Liberty Sept.
The Virginia volleyball team faces North Carolina and N.C. State at home this weekend as it searches for an elusive ACC win.
The Virginia volleyball team will end a string of four consecutive road matches with pivotal bouts at Clemson and Georgia Tech this weekend.
The Virginia volleyball team suffered losses at Boston College Thursday and Maryland Sunday to remain winless in ACC play. The Cavaliers (5-10, 0-5 ACC) lost to the Eagles (8-9, 2-3 ACC) 3-0 Thursday night in a match that was closer than the scoreboard indicated.
The Virginia volleyball team heads to Chestnut Hill Thursday to take on Boston College in the first game of a four-match road trip. The Cavaliers (5-8, 0-3 ACC) lost twice against formidable conference opponents last weekend, falling to Miami in three games and then-No.
