Wolverines thrash punchless Cavs

Reeling from a three-game losing streak and season-long shooting woes, the Virginia women’s basketball team took the floor against Michigan on Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena looking to change its tune. By the time the final horn had sounded on a 73-53 loss, however, the repetitive clangs of a ball striking iron remained the definitive sound of the Cavaliers’ 2013-14 campaign. Though Virginia (3-5) put up 57 shots against the Wolverines (6-3), only 19 fell through the net.

Women's basketball eliminated from ACC Tournament

The Virginia women’s basketball team knew that it had to recapture last Sunday’s stellar play if they were to make a run in the ACC tournament. Thursday night, a strong second half was not enough to make up for a disappointing first half as the No. 6 seed Cavaliers lost to No. 11 seed Boston College 66-57 in Greensboro, N.C.

Rejuvenated Virginia readies for ACC Tournament

Following a rejuvenating win in its regular season finale, the Virginia women’s basketball team heads to the ACC tournament in Greensboro, N.C. for a first round matchup against No. 11 seed Boston College Thursday. The Cavaliers will look to build off their momentum from topping Florida State at home Sunday by making a surprise postseason run.

Virginia drops fifth straight

Ataira Franklin poured in 23 points for the Virginia women’s basketball team Thursday night, but it was not enough to overcome North Carolina State, as the Cavaliers fell 80-59 to the Wolfpack in Raleigh for their fifth straight loss. Virginia (15-13, 7-10 ACC) scored first to go up 2-0, but that would be the last time the team led in the first half as the Wolfpack (14-15, 6-11 ACC) pulled away early.

Struggling Cavs conclude season

A late season slide has left the Virginia women’s basketball team with only a slim chance of making an NCAA tournament appearance, but going into their final weekend of the regular season, the Cavaliers are still determined to finish strong. “I think all of the pressure is off now,” coach Joanne Boyle said.

Cavs lose fourth straight

Struggling through injury, the Virginia women’s basketball team put up a strong performance against Wake Forest but again succumbed to the same late-game struggles that have plagued the squad recently, as the Demon Deacons pulled away in overtime for a 73-68 win at John Paul Jones Arena.
