General John P. Jumper, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force, issued a tribute to Sept. 11 and the American armed forces for a crowded audience during last Friday's Jefferson Society meeting.

Greenspan faces criticism for economic woes

Despite what Hollywood would have us believe, money does make the world go round. If power can be judged on the basis of who controls that money, then it is no wonder that Alan Greenspan, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, often is called the second most powerful man in America -- and, according to economists, sometimes the first. However, despite the enormous amount of power Greenspan may wield over monetary policy making, critics often use him as a convenient scapegoat for current economic woes. "The many problems recently affecting financial markets can hardly be blamed on the Fed nor could it have done very much to avert them," Economics Prof.

University opens Student Activities Center

The University's student organizations will have a new home after the opening of the Student Activities Center on Thursday. The center, located on the first floor of Newcomb Hall, replaces the Student Organizations Office.

Council vote may eliminate first-year parking privilege

First years might find adjustment to college life a little more difficult with the possible elimination of second-semester parking privileges. Kevin Hanlon and Brandon Possin, Student Council parking and transportation committee members, wrote a resolution calling for the elimination of first-year parking, which the entire committee will vote on at its Sept.

Employment outlook to improve this fall

Students seeking employment in the coming year might not face as dire prospects as they feared. Although many companies remain cautious about the economy's recovery, a little initiative does a great deal to ease the often arduous process of finding a job. The unemployment rate is one of the best indicators of economic wellbeing.

Record number of students apply to Nursing School

A nationwide nursing shortage and increased interest in job security may have spurred this year's recent rise in Nursing School applications at the University. Of the several routes to enrollment in the Nursing School, both application numbers and acceptance rates increased in each one.

City approves permit parking measure

If you live in off-Grounds housing, your parking problems soon may get even worse. Charlottesville City Council members passed an ordinance Monday to adopt permit parking policies on individual streets in the University area, Council member Kevin Lynch said. Council met with residents of the Venable, Jefferson Park Avenue, Lewis Mountain and Fifeville areas before passing the ordinance.
