Love handles leave bedroom and enter laboratory research

Plastic Surgery Prof. Adam Katz may bring love handles back in style. Katz has found that discarded fat tissue may be an excellent source of stem cells, which potentially can develop into any of the 220 cell types that make up the human body. "A patient could in the future use their own fat cells to heal themselves," Katz said. Stem cells often are called pluripotent because of their unique ability to transform into other kinds of cells.

Research aims to relieve colitis

Imagine having to run out of the middle of a class lecture to head to the bathroom. Imagine doing this 10 to 20 times a day. This is the embarrassing situation faced by students who have ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease characterized by its attack on the inner lining of the colon and the large intestines.

UNC signs anti-sweatshop labor deal with Nike

In an agreement whose focus was not just financial gain, but also human rights, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Nike sportswear company collaborated last week on an eight-year merchandising agreement worth $28 million. Under the agreement, Nike agreed to an anti-sweatshop labor code that applies to uniforms and other merchandise with UNC's logo.
