Foundation honors student with scholarship, research opportunity

At the beginning of this month, fourth-year College student Courtney Schroeder accepted a $50,000 scholarship from the Winston Churchill Foundation that will allow her to spend the next year performing research at Cambridge University in England.The scholarship, which is awarded to about 13 students annually, allows students to gain a year of research experience before entering graduate school, said Astronomy Prof.

120th Cavalier Daily Staff elected Saturday

Members of The Cavalier Daily gathered Saturday to elect the newspaper?s 120th managing and junior boards.Former Operations Manager Andrew Baker, a third-year College student, was elected as the paper?s new editor-in-chief.?I?m very excited to work with the new staff,? Baker said.

Student Council initiative asks for free late-night parking for students

The University?s Parking and Transportation Committee is currently considering an initiative proposed by Student Council that would provide free late-night parking for students in the Central Grounds Parking Garage near Newcomb Hall.The initiative, headed by Council?s Safety and Wellness Committee, proposes providing free parking for students from 10 p.m.

The Inter-Fraternity Council held elections for its 2008 Executive Board last night, electing third-year College student Taylor Richardson president. Richardson said he is "extremely excited" about his new position and will have some "big shoes to fill" in the coming year.

Officials praise new faculty role on BOV

After the first semester of faculty representation on the Board of Visitors, both faculty members and administrators are calling the change a success. Last June, the Board invited former Faculty Senate Chair Kenneth Schwartz to serve as a non-voting member of the Board's Educational Policy Committee, the External Affairs Committee and the Special Committee on Diversity in an attempt to provide faculty with a more active voice on the Board. U.Va. to offer online bill payment

Starting in February University students will be able to pay their tuition bills online through QuikPay@UVA. According to Sarah Jordan, director of communications for Student Financial Services, students' bills will no longer be mailed to their permanent addresses.

Faculty weighs new school

The possible creation of a school of environmental science was a topic of interest at yesterday's Faculty Senate meeting that saw differing levels of support.
