Students enlist aid of city with living wage

Workers and Students United, an organization led by University students pushing the institution to pay its employees a living wage, proposed that the Charlottesville City Council pass a resolution to encourage the University to adopt such practices at the April 19 Council meeting. Erin Franey, third-year College student and leader of WASU, said many University employees must take second or third jobs to support their families.

Blue Ridge shooting victim dies; suspect now faces murder charge

Tim Davis, a 27-year old Charlottesville employee for WNRN radio and victim of the April 5 Blue Ridge Parkway shooting, passed away at the University Medical Center Friday. Currently, 18-year old Christina Floyd, who also was injured in the shooting, is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. Ralph Leon Jackson, the man suspected of shooting Davis and Floyd, is currently detained at Middle River Regional Jail in Verona, Va., without bond.

Increase in out-of-state capital fees

The Virginia state legislature has decided to increase capital fees for out-of-state students who attend Virginia colleges and universities. Out-of-state students, who comprise about one-third of the University community, currently pay a fee that funds capital-related projects at their schools.

Forum raises living wage issue at U.Va.

University students, faculty members and community members gathered to discuss issues about the minimum wage of University employees during a forum that took place in Memorial Gymnasium last Saturday. The forum was organized by U.Va.

Venture summit brings in businesses

A collection of some of the nation's top venture capitalist firms, including many of their senior managing partners, came to Charlottesville last Thursday and Friday for the University's Venture Summit, a one-and-a-half day program organized by the Office of the Vice President for Research. The program consisted of a variety of event intended to establish the University as a global destination for technology-based ventures, Vice President for Research Tom Skalak said.

Student turnout lags with low 29 percent

Despite the University Board of Election's efforts to publicize and promote the University-wide elections, just 29 percent of students cast their ballots to elect their student leaders last week. "We're a little discouraged by the voter turnout," UBE President Jennifer Kim said.

The man was sitting in his car and was armed with a handgun, according to Albemarle County Police.

U.Va.-Wise, Darden create leadership development program

The Darden School and the University's College at Wise have paired up to create the Darden/U.Va-Wise Partnership for Leadership Development, a program that will offer six unique courses about the subject to mid-level and senior executives from about 25 companies in southwestern Virginia and neighboring regions of Tennessee and North Carolina. Each of the six courses will cover a different topic related to leadership development during the course of the two-year program, said Colin Winter, a Darden School director for the program. "The variety of courses will provide students with the opportunity to select those that make the most sense for their needs and career path," he said.
