¿Habla Español?

Living in a country home to the fifth largest Spanish-speaking community in the world, it comes as no surprise that the department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese is one of the largest departments at the University. "Spanish has become de facto the second language of this country, and people have started to realize this," department Chair Randolph Pope said.

Digging up the past

For anthropology Prof. Elizabeth Arkush, the past has been a lifelong passion. "I have wanted to be an archaeologist as long as I can remember," Arkush said.

Fair game

As Students Promoting Fair Trade (SPFT) would tell you, coffee -- usually thought as a lifesaver during midterms or a constant companion while writing papers -- in fact has a much more interesting story than being a run-of-the-mill caffeinated drink. Fourth-year College student and Secretary of the SPFT Lizzie Heaney said it is important to distinguish what fair trade really means. "Many people mistakenly categorize Students Promoting Fair Trade as an anti-free trade group," Heaney said.

A religious experience

By Defne Gunay Cavalier Daily Associate Editor Out of all the departments at the University, the religious studies department perhaps has the most definitive stamp of approval -- that of the U.S.

From the Big Apple to Hooville

An assistant professor in the history department, James Loeffler is certainly one of those people for whom moving around and traveling have been as much a career-building exercise as a hobby or a necessity.

Academical inferno

As the University prepares for a night of fireworks at the Rotunda for the kickoff of the largest capital campaign in University history, some benefits of which will be dedicated to the South Lawn Project, one is reminded of another event at the Rotunda involving fire, crowds and much activity -- albeit of a different, and more devastating, nature. As it is infamously known, Thomas Jefferson's focal point of the Academical Village was seriously damaged in a fire Oct.

The sobering truth

Wahoo: The most widely-known use of the word can be found in the cheer at the end of the "Good Old Song." Although the origin of the nickname is lost to many students, nowadays most associate it with the drinking culture at the University. "I have to admit, when I hear the term 'Wahoo,' I think of those T-shirts that people wear which claims that a wahoo is a fish that can drink up to three times its size," third-year College student Alexandra Greilsamer said.

Estimating economics

With 679 undergraduate and 108 graduate students, the economics department is one of the largest departments in the College.

Taking things literally

By Defne Gunay Cavalier Daily Associate Editor There are some names out there that every University student is familiar with, even if only by name -- Shakespeare, Hemingway and Salinger, to name a few, but it is the English department with whom these giants resonate the most. Department Chair Jahan Ramazani said, although having a long history at the University, the English department took on its current shape beginning in the 1960s, under the leadership of Fredson Bowers, who assumed the position in 1963.

Making the past present

Looking at the amount of dedication University students have for the history of the University and Mr. Jefferson in general, it comes as no surprise that the Corcoran Department of History hosts one of the most popular areas of study for undergraduate and graduate students.
