So, perhaps stating that Mia Thermopolis ruined my entire life is a tad bit dramatic, but I don’t think it is an exaggeration at all to say that “The Princess Diaries” negatively altered how I viewed myself.
So what has really changed besides the clock and the calendar? What is there to celebrate?
We are all entitled to our own opinions — though they are shaped by our experiences — and I recognize that perhaps I am more ready for change than others.
It is a tale as old as time — Black women being spoken over and spoken for — and one that extends far beyond politics, I might add.
I love to write. There is just something about the act of physically stringing together letters that become words, sentences, stories — I find it fascinating.
Over the past few weeks, a question has continued to resurface in my head — If the year 2020 was a tangible form that I could see and talk to, what would I say to it?
Last fall, I was sitting in one of my Curry classes when our professor asked us to participate in an exercise that opened my eyes to how new some of the University community is to talking about race.

We live in a world that is dominated by social media and in a culture that puts too much trust in its most-followed users. It is more obvious now — while the globe is battling COVID-19 — than ever just how dependent we are on “reliable news sources” like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
