Spring game marks offseason of change

Spring football games tend to be nothing more than glorified scrimmages that generate little buzz ? unless there is one of three factors in play: a major competition for the starting quarterback slot, a new coach or a new offensive or defensive system.All three of these currently are affecting the Virginia football team, and so Saturday?s game at Scott Stadium proved to be an interesting matchup for the nearly 8,000 fans in attendance.Just as was the case last year, the Cavaliers have a three-way competition for the starting quarterback position.

Virginia welcomes new basketball coach Bennett

Tony Bennett officially is the man in the charge of the Virginia men?s basketball team.The hiring of Bennett to replace former coach Dave Leitao ? who resigned two weeks ago ? may have surprised many Cavalier fans, but Athletic Director Craig Littlepage said he is thrilled to have Bennett as Virginia?s new head coach.At yesterday?s press conference formally announcing Bennett?s hiring, Littlepage recalled a conversation he had with someone familiar with West Coast and Pac-10 basketball and the response he received when Bennett?s name was broached as a potential candidate.?I mentioned Tony?s name, and there was kind of a silence,? Little page said.

A weekend worthy of ACClaim

As a little kid growing up in Harrisonburg, Va., it was a dream of mine to someday attend the ACC Tournament ? which has been going on every year since 1954.

Virginia falls to Eagles in season-ending loss

Virginia could not carry the momentum from its regular-season ending victory against Maryland and fell to Boston College 76-63 in the first round of the ACC Tournament last night in Atlanta, Georgia ? an outcome that made former Boston College quarterback and current Atlanta Falcon Matt Ryan, who was in attendance at the game, happy.?It?s always difficult to end a season,? Virginia coach Dave Leitao said.
