Charlottesville City Council considers automobile tax hike

At a meeting Monday, Charlottesville City Council adopted budget guidelines to aid in City Manager Gary O'Connell's construction of a financial plan to fund City government for the next fiscal year. Facing a projected $3.2 million budget shortfall, City Council is looking at raising local car taxes next year, as it tries to lower real estate taxes.

Event urges eating disorder awareness

University students, administrators, and health professionals gathered at an inaugural speak-out vigil last night in order to recognize and bring greater awareness to eating disorders. "Perfect Illusions" co-creators fourth-year College student Anne Fishwick and third-year College student Whitney Snyders, interns at the newly formed University committee U.Va.

Week's events focus on international education

Yesterday kicked off the University's celebration of International Education Week, a series of events coordinated through the Lorna Sundberg International Center and intended to recognize and celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange. "I hope that this week will serve as a jumping off point to develop interest in the rest of the world, as well as a personal understanding to treasure it," Center Director Suzanne Louis said. The week is part of a national effort by the U.S.

Conference explores nuclear alternatives

Students and community activists assembled in Clark Hall Saturday to learn about the health, safety and environmental risks of nuclear power and to gather support for a safe, clean energy future in Virginia. Titled "Virginia at the Crossroads -- Which Energy Future?" the conference was organized around Dominion Power's proposal to build two new nuclear reactors at North Anna, a nuclear facility near Charlottesville. This would be one of the first reactors built in the United States since the meltdown at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in 1979. Elena Day, a conference organizer from People's Alliance for Clean Energy, said she wanted young people to start thinking about alternatives to our future energy needs.
